74mm MidiChamp
on: March 22, 2014, 07:36:38 AM
I was going to build an Alox Executive and then I thought why not slot in a few 58mm tools like the opener/phillips from a Rambler (for example) and invent the MidiChamp.

I like the 91mm Awl on Chaka's 58mm woodcarver.
Anybody know what also might fit. or have any suggestions?
I have a "spare" Wenger Micro-Toolchest so possibly some of the tools off that...

Before anyone mentions it... NO HOOK.

sounds awesome. Can't wait to see the finish product.

Wenger tools should be easy to fit but thicker tools like phillip combo tool probably need to mod the spring.

The combo tool should work like the scissors and ride on two springs.

What about a fishscaler ? :D

I don´t know enough about the tools in the small Vics and Wengers to contribute in a useful way.
But I do have a smooth Silver Alox 74 mm, if you are looking for nice scales?

Anyways, i´m looking forward to yet another interesting mod!

This post might help. Neil did something similar and used the combo tool on the same layer as the two blades or blade-small nail file.

I just want to say that the idea of the 91mm awl in a 58mm sak came from RickinFl. I did use the chisel.  There's a post from him around here.

Maybe you could use the cork screw. That would be cool, a little awkward to use.

Pretty easy to add an Opener to the Orange-peeler blade. I used a Dremel and parting disk initially, finished the internal edges with a diamond-tipped set of bits I got cheap on Ebay.
A short length of electrical shrink tubing makes the Orange-peeler blade safer too. The knife closes OK with it on, and it pops off fast.

@PTRSAK, I know I late but awesome. That's nearly exactly the type of 74mm I wanted to tackle. Only add the cigar hole punch and do what neillcurrie did to the peeler. Or add a bottle opener from a golf tool or something.

Also liked the fact you added some other odd pieces here and there. Have you carried it?

Haven't peened it up yet.

Still a little fine tuning to do. Awl sitting a tiny bit low and the Wenger combo tool a little high.

OK did you finish the peening up yet

I am curious to find out if you carried this one much and since so much time has elapsed then surely you have some pros and cons  Hopefully mostly Pros though :like:

Yes, peened up fully. I find it's a good knife for EDC in situations with high sheeple exposure as it's very non threatening.

I'm trying to put together a "small tools" SAK with all the tools not usually found on 91mm and 93mm.

I have an Execultive coming, and will probably grab a MiniChamp and an Alox knife in whatever size I decide on for the scales.

Thanks for bringing up this thread, I hadn't come across it. Another mod SAK was mentioned - "woodcarver"....

here's the link http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,51090.msg860933.html#msg860933

I REALLY dig this, not only are these tools absent on some knives, but using them as back tools is tricky.

However now I'm really curious to see which 58mm and 74mm tools match the thickness of various 91mm layers (which tools can I shoehorn onto the back of a 91mm)

Judging by a Moneyclip I had briefly before gifting it to a non-knife/SAK person who liked it, it works very well :tu:
