Strongest KEYCHAIN pliers? No LM MINI nor JUICE
on: September 16, 2016, 11:59:58 AM
Hello to everybody

I need your help and wisdom

I am looking for the strongest KEYCHAIN PLIERS (I know it is a bit contradictory, but the better tool is the one you always carry and have at hand)

Tasks: Cutting fine wires, extracting and straighten things with pliers, removing staples, using drivers (flat and phillips medium and big)

The pliers with drivers would be paired with the Victorinox EXECUTIVE, so you can imagine the things I need.
I have a nice slim juice (only pliers + drivers) from TattoSteve but I want something even lighter for minimal EDC

Conditions:
-LM Mini or Juice Series NO
- Foldable and sub 3" size
- Keychain carry
- Good wirecutters => Gerber Solstice or SeberTech M2 or M3 discarded
-Light! Very light!
- I only need pliers and drivers.
If has more tools must be removed (no knife nor scissors)

Options: (removing tools and pairing with drivers if needed)

- Sebertech M4
- Sog Crossgrip (the strongest, I think)
- LM Style PS "Mr pinchy" :(
- LM PS4 removing knife and scissors?
- Gerber Dime Travel
- Kilimanjaro Ascend
- Swiss Tech Micro Plus 9 in 1
- Swiss Tech Micro Max 19 in 1 (I have it but I don't like it)
- Swiss Tech Micro Tech series?
- Mini Bear Jaws (rare and flimsy?)

Thank you guys!

 I think a custom SAK with SAK pliers + Cybertool is your best bet.

Thank you but I don't want a SAK

I have a Vic Executive and I want to pair it with a sub 3 inches keychain folding pliers

Greetings

Swisstech are great tools as long as you dont get the polished ones. Shiny ones are slippery and the cutters are rounded off in polishing.
Their cutters are good and sharp otherwize. Ive cut electric fence wire with an original micro plus, and coat hangers with an ES
They are also great to palm when you have to reach way down in an engine and pry off a stuck socket thats come off the wrench.

There are two big downsides though;
1) they swivel open on your key chain and can be lost, so keep  a rubber band or elastic keeper wrapped on them
2) the aluminium rivets loosen up over time and may need re-set, a grommet punch in the same size from the craft store works well for this.

This aside I have used the same 2 off and on over the last 15yrs with no real problems

I wouldn't bother with the Buck Tools MiniBuck 350 if you want somewhat robust pliers- it is also "rare and flimsy".

Have you looked at the SOG Micro ToolClip ?  Not easy to find one these days, but they are around (most sellers want decent $$$ for them though).

The Stanley Auto-Plier is another small one (I'm not convinced the plier mechanism would be all robust though).

I've been happy with a Squirt P4 as my EDC, but unless you get a Squirt with torx screw pivots it is a big job to remove unwanted components.

I have been down this road and I think I reached the end of it about 12 years ago.
Strongest Pliers IMO are hands down the Sebertech, now IDL Tools. But you need the Sebertech, the ones made in the USA. The IDL Tool equivalent is nowhere near as well made, nor as robust, nor will it perform under wire-cutting or general plier-ing activities anywhere near as proficiently.
In a pinch once, I replaced a MTB Brake wire (2mm thick twisted strand Stainless Steel), and I could have simply coiled the excess cable for the rider, and he could have continued his ride easily, but I applied considerable force to the pliers to see if they would do the cutting of the cable, and I was amazed that they cut it cleanly. A crimp/cap on the end, and he was GTG. This was a distance outside of MOAB, maybe 12 years ago: without a working front brake it would have been quite a walk back.

I've tried other offerings too. The older, discontinued Swiss-tec (also USA made) are solid and robust, and may also cut such a cable, but the beauty of the Sebertech's is that the handles open exactly like a Leatherman, the Swiss-Tecs may fold on you under plier like pressure. But the Swiss-Tecs screwdrivers are much more substantial, and if you can overcome the issues with the plier tending to fold then the Swiss-Tecs may be a better overall compromise for you.
Almost any of the more modern plier like tools in this size category won't have the plier strength and correct hardening/tempering and machining tolerances to approach the USA-made "originals" quality. The tools inside the Sebertech's are obviously very small, simply a result of the very limited size that such tools have to be, but they can be used. The blade will take a decent edge and hold it, but you won't be using it for much more than cutting string or Paracord.

Here's the optimized toolkit I came up with. Even in a tin of this size I have the ability to perform a variety of basic necessary repairs, and I even have a few small spare replacement bolts, a chan link, about 2 feet of Ducktape, and even rudimentary metal cutting and shaping tools (small file and a strip of hacksaw blade. Everything is tiny, and has obvious compromises, but it'll get many a MTB'er out of a jam.

Thank you guys.

I have in my collection:

Lm Style PS = Mr pinchy
LM Ps4
Gerber Dime Travel
Sog Crossgrip, probably the strongest
Sebertech M4
Idl M2= Bad wire cutters
Gerber Solstice fake = Bad wire cutters
Swiss tech 19 in 1

I will have to buy other Sog Crossgrip or Sebertech M4 to disassemble it.

I like the Swiss Tech 9 in 1

I will see what I do :tu:

I always wanted to transform a CrossGrip into a LM Mini. There is enough room in the handle of the Crosscut for fold-out handles. This would make a pretty nice pocket pliers (you would loose the drivers though). Just saying.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

If you want the best key chain pliers, i doubt you could do better that the discontinued SOG Crossgrip.

Comound leverage makes them just as tough as everyone else's full sized pliers.
