Tiny one-piece keychain screwdrivers.
on: December 16, 2008, 08:04:48 PM
I've been wanting a tiny screwdriver on my key chain for a while... nothing as substantial as an Atwood, I really like keeping my key chain light. (Right now all I have on there is a Photon and a couple of keys.)

So I guess I'm wondering if you've found anything of the sort that you like? Have you run into some you don't like?

And, in general, have you found them to be useful for small jobs, or are they more gimmicky than functional?

Been thinking of things like this...

I think that my Dad has the set at the bottom of the pic but I don't believe that they have ever been on his keychain  But he does carry a lot of keys (for vehicles, locks, our work trailer, house and everything else that needs a key :D But to me IMHO I think that the set at the bottom looks sturdier than the rest

Come to think of it I have the 4 way driver to the left and I don't believe that I have ever used it either ::)

I am sure whatever you decide it will be a good choice for you :tu:

I have versions of the top 2 screwdrivers shown in the photo.   Though I carried one of them on my key ring for years, I never used it because I carry a multitool and a Commando precision screwdriver set.   I recently removed the keyring screwdriver after realizing it was just extra weight on the keyring.

I carried one similar to the disk one too (opened up), I used it a couple of times,
no more, a SAK is much better!

I actually bought a pair of the lower ones a week or so ago. And they're great for emergencies. My EDC lately has been those, a Vic Classic, a P-51 can opener and a razor knife and they have performed just fine for me. Much better than I had expected them to.

I've got one in my wallet, never really used it much.
A keyring sized SAK or Micra knocks it out, far more useful  :)

I carry one of those Sears ones with a P-51 it handles a lot of things also its no big deal if it gets lost or stolen as it cost 2-3 dollars.

For some reason I really like these one-piece keychain tools. Something about maximum utility from a single piece appeals to me.

Or the Crony... ;) :pok:

Personally, I would suggest grabbing a LM micra.  I've used the round 4 way screwdriver and it works ok, but a Micra is small, light, and does a helluva job on screws (as well as other things).

I actually started a thread like this a couple of weeks ago.

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,7838.0.html

Here's another keychain screwdriver I really like.

http://www.pronto.com/Compact-Reversible-Screwdriver-Key-Chain-p_1022336456-PP

Maybe if enough people are interested we could get a Multi-tool.org version made.

Heh, I think it was actually your thread that got me thinking about these recently. I thought I had seen a thread about keychain screwdrivers recently on BF, but then when I searched for it I couldn't find it. :ahhh ::) So I thought I'd bring the topic up here. :-\ Too many late nights. :ahhh

Anyway, I want to give the super simple one-piece design a try, but I still think these with a MT.O logo would be cool...

This might be a good place to mention the Atwood Keyton thingummy that I got from Neil (NKB) the other day. I've messed  around with it a bit, but not used it in anger yet:

It's natty enough, but I still want a pry-baby type (or a Crony) ;)

I used to come here a lot.

Is that a strange finish, or is it rust?   I've never seen that finish before.

According to Flash (who had it before Neil) it is a "anodised bronze effect titanium flat keyton", which seems like a decent description. According to the card in the packet, it's "Made of 6AL4V aircraft-grade titanium". So I guess it can't be rust!

I looked on Atwood's site, and the regular keytons seem a bit more interesting than this "flat" one, but at least it's a bit unusual!

I used to come here a lot.

I've had several Keyton's but I've never seen that finish. The standard Keyton is nice, but they flat ones are really cool for keychain carry.

What is the handle material?  It seems to me that it would strip relatively easily. I'd still want at least one tho  ::)

It's hard plastic but I have a pair on my keychain that I use and they work pretty good. Of course I don't use them constantly day in and day out but for the occasional loose screw they're great. I like them better than the screwdrivers on SAK's.

I disassembled a 96 Soldier once to put the bottle opener/screwdriver on my keyring, but it didn't fit. I tried drilling it out, but that didn't work so well.
