Is EDC a lighter over the top?
on: April 11, 2009, 12:44:20 AM
I've been EDC a zippo for the past few months, because in the winter it could come in handy when car's door lock is frozen. Never had to use it fortunately. Now summer is coming, due to less clothing pocket space is becoming a premium. I don't smoke, nobody else I know does, and I don't do paracord or anything. So basically I have no need for a lighter at all, and I carry a firesteel on my keychain.

So should I drop it from my EDC gear? Seems it wouldn't get any use, but the gadget freak in my don't want to.

+1 on that comment. The mini Bic won't need any maintenance or refueling and will last for a very long time (keep it dry), even with use.  I smoke and an orange mini bic is part of my edc + spares.

I always encourage non smokers to carry a lighter on them just in case, comes in handy lighting a siggy for a pretty lady, or as an icebreaker of sorts.

Maintainence and price isn't really a concern, I refill it once per week and takes a minute and by now it's already a habit. The problem is I'm literally running out of pockets to carry all my stuff without winter jacket. Even the leatherman has beed downgraded to briefcase carry.   :(

If you don't use it..you don't use it!  I personally won't go without my Zippo even though I don't smoke.  Light candles, heat up a needle/nail to push it through plastic cleanly..hell even melting plastic if you need to bend it.

I've got a Zippo with some hockey tape around it, then a peice of bike inner tube around that.  Coat pocket is a Bic and a book of matches.

comes in handy lighting a siggy for a pretty lady, or as an icebreaker of sorts. I agree Donvito :tu:

Lighters are handy for wiring work (shrink wrap and softening soldered wires) and  can help in loosening stuck nuts/bolts.  I carry one if there's a likelihood I'll be doing that sort of work.

Ah, but you're forgetting Sod's Law, which dictates that the very first day he doesn't carry it, he'll need it.

I used to come here a lot.

I think that peanut lighter is cool but i can't hang with their 8.00 shipping exspecally when country com is an hour from my house and they don't do will calls.  >:(  One of these days i will make an order large enough to make the 8.00 shipping worth it. They do sell a lot of cool stuff.

Here is a few low cost Bic options that you can carry on your key chain. One has a safety pin wrapped with duck tape their is also a sewing needle and dental floss under the tape. The other is para cord wrapped and it has a small peice hacksaw blade that is a small knife and saw their is also a small safety pin, sewing needle, fishing line, small paper clip, and duck tape under the cord.  :D

It's possible in a pitch, a sheet of paper with a bit of pocket lint or cotton and you got a match that you can light with a ferro rod

I carry a very slim metal gas one I have even though I don't smoke any more. For those who want a peanut lighter, I got one from DX which is pretty good quality for the money and they don't charge shipping of course.

I thought about peanut lighters, but I guess I'm a bit of brand snob, because like bics, they are "just another lighter", whereas zippo (that use lighter fluid, not butane insert), well, is zippo.

But again it really doesn't matter what I carry, they all present the same problem, that I'm don't have enough pockets, and I don't like to keep things that can scratch each other together.

For me a lighter is even more EDC than a SAK or LM, since those can get nicked if I go to a club, but the lighter is always there.

Any decent set of trous will have a coin/watch pocket type thing you can slip a zippo into

I haven't smoked in years but still carry my zippo.  Having a way to make fire is a must for edc and a lighter is the best option ( work smarter, not harder ).  Butane would be the best choice so you don't have to refill it regularly.
I swapped out the original insert on my zippo for a soft flame butane one to maintain the original look.  The high polished chrome finish on mine also makes an excellent impromtu mirror for when the wife/girl friend needs to check her makeup. ;)

Yeah, Wife/girlfriend. What ever you say, pretty boy.

I've usually got matches & a cricket lighter in the car, or somewhere nearabouts, but really, a Zippo is pretty reliable once you get into the habit of keeping it filled and not too gummy.

I must admit I'd feel a bit wary carrying a lighter, always imagining it's going to break or leak and set me alight  :D  Bit paranoid I know.

I've been EDC a Blazer Pocket Micro Torch (PB-207) and a Zippo with the Z-plus insert for about six months now. I really have no need for two but the Zippo conveniently fits in my cell phone case so I carry it. I like the Blazer for soldering (I do this quite a bit) and we have camp fires a few times a week here at school so its good for that too. I've dropped both a few times and never have a problem with either. The best part is the fuel doesn't evaporate.

The Zippo slides right in behind the phone and actually makes the case work better with the phone. win/win
