Vonage, or VoIP
on: November 06, 2006, 06:23:58 AM
I'm just curious how many here use Vonage, or a similiar Voice over IP phone service.  I finally switched to Vonage the end of last week and had nothing but trouble for a couple days.  I ended up having to do some adjustments to my router settings and it's been pretty reliable for the last 24 hours...

If you do have it, how was it to set up for you?
If you took all the intestines out of your body and stretched them end to end... you would die.

Bringing this back up..I just switched to  Vonage this past week. I followed the instructions, and had no trouble at all.So far we're both very pleased with the service, and best of all,$25.00 a month for unlimited loacal, and long distance within the US,Canada, and Puerto Rico.I haven't tried out the free calls to certain European countries yet.

I use Skype for overseas computer to computer calls, and occasionally for gaming and/or conference calls, but since my wife works for the phone company, and I don't pay for long distance in the US and Canada anyway, I'm probably not going to change any time soon.

VoIP was another one of my brilliant ideas years ago that someone else has gotten rich from.

My buddy works for Vonage. He has Voip at home but hates it. I don't think Voip hysteria has happened like they, especially Vonage, hoped it would. I don't think Vonage is doing well, at least here in NJ. I'd be surprised if they're still around 5 years from now.

Have had Vonage for two years.
Some initial problems were resolved by adding a Linksys WRT54GL router and
loading it with third party firmware that allows QOS setttings.
See http://xrl.in/80i for info and instructions.

OK for a long while then more problems when my ISP was acquired by Comcast.
Finally, they got their networks consolidated and since then its been great and very dependable.
Have had no outages at all for the past 8 months.

So much so, that I prepaid for a year (by doing so, you get 12 months for the price of 10.)
Really like it now and recommend it.
-Mike

I'm looking at the VoIP systems right now because I'm tired of paying Verizon $80 a month for something I don't use that much.

A friend at work told me about the Magic Jack. I got one and it doesn't work very well. I can hear other people fine but they can't hear me very well, the signal breaks up. >:(

http://www.techchee.com/2007/12/25/usb-magic-jack-lets-your-computer-make-calls-to-home-phones-for-3995-a-year/

I just started a new thread called "Cell phone vs. landline" to gather info about dumping my landline. Please check it out and chime in, I need al the help I can get.

My Skype name is realdef in case anyone needs/wants it.  I don't run it too often as it's a bit of a resource hog, but I have it!  If anyone wants to make use of it and talk to me (you must be desperate for friends if that's the case! :P) let me know and I'll fire it up anytime.

I can also be reached at the following:

GTalk: sosak001@gmail.com
MSN: realdef@hotmail.com
Yahoo: multitoooldotorg
I think I have an ICQ number somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can remember it...

I think the whole idea behind Skype is great but doesn't the other person have to have it also?

I believe that's the case and I'm afraid the few people who actually want to talk to me aren't that computer savvy.  :(

Yeah, it's a free download/install, and often comes bundled with new computers, flash drives and communications hardware like headsets, microphones and webcams.

It's free to make computer to computer calls, but it also functions like a phone, allowing you to make calls to any phones anywhere in the world, but at a cost.  I never use it for that because I am too cheap, so I can't comment on it's usefulness.

Just added you.

I need to start using Skype more.  I have it installed on my U3 SmartDrive so I can use it anywhere, and on my Netbook.

I just found out that Skype is a company that eBay owns. Hence, you can place a "Skype Contact Icon" on all of your eBay listings...  R/S  of the listing -
