Hi Benner,

Glad to see your support for the Xtract.  I also think it is a pretty neat tool.  It has a few disadvanteges (over dedicated tools), but it is a nice compromise.  I've got 13 of them and like most.

Although my collection focus is Leatherman, I didn't care for the plier action on the PST with the channels outside when it was introduced.  I bought the Buck 360 when it came out to solve that issue.  Now I have 6 Buck 360's and 164 Leatherman tools (not counting knives, flashlights and pruners) - go figure :D :D

Thanks for supporting a good MT.

Cheers - Joe

I think the X-tract is overlooked by a lot of people but I am not sure why.  Seems a real shame.

I think you've touched on some of the reasons above - presumed low quality due to low cost etc.

Just took the plunge and ordered one for myself.   More Buck goodness on its way!   :mail:

Low cost? I thought they were quite expensive. But I can vouch for the fact that they are excellent quality. You will like it ;)

Compared to what? They're £40-£50 over here aren't they? That would get a hell of a lot of SAK.

You'd get a Leatherman Kick for a lot less than an X-Tract though. Is that a fair comparison?

I don't think I'm explaining myself.  On the great scale of multitools, the X-tract is comparatively cheaper than most (branded ones anyway).  There are obviously cheaper, but overall it fits in that cheaper catergory IMO.

I think he's saying that the X Tract is cheaper than most other high end tools. I see what he's getting at.

Yeah, but why would you compare the X-Tract to something like a Charge or a Wave? It ha sthe equivalent tool selection of something like a Kick, or a larger SAK, so it should be cheaper than those.

My point being that it's expensive to similar multitools.

True enough, but it's a quality tool for $40!

Got my original model XTract for $27.

If you peruse the interwebs and are patient, eventually you can find lower prices on most of this type of stuff.

Exactly what I did, and eventually Noth came to my rescue. I really like the tool, I just think they are a bit expensive, hence my interrogation of Ben :D

I enjoy it when you interrogate Ben, he squirms a lot.

For what it's worth, if the X-tract was really more expensive than the Kick, I would think it's worth the money because of the one-handedness of it.

Exactly, that is what is unique about XTract:
1. Every implement opens, locks, and can be used one-handed
2. Every implement can be unlocked and closed one-handed.

I posted a tip about an add on clip for the XTract:
http://www.brightguy.com/products/UK_4AA_Pocket_Clip.php
some time back, so some of you may not have seen it.

This xytel clip happens to fit the XTract original model almost as if it was made for it.

You can carry the XTract clipped into a trouser pocket or waistband.

I always use the clip and never use the holster that came with the XTract (which is a very good nylon holster with snap closure.)  I just don't like to belt carry stuff around town or around the house if I can avoid it.

Oh, I don't disagree that it's reasonable value, it's a great tool. That said, I'd have had one a lot quicker if it didn't cost roughly twice as much as a Kick!
