Today was a day of chores around the farm.  The Charge was called upon for multiple small tasks (obligatory Multitool content).  This afternoon, I was mowing the lawn, when I looked up and saw a raccoon slowly walking by the house.

Unfortunately, in our area, about 70% of the raccoons seen ambling about during the day are rabid, so they're given no quarter around the farm.  I called my wife and told her to grab the gun, there's a raccoon in the front yard.  A few minutes she showed up with the .22 rifle and a half box of cartridges.

It had been about 5 minutes and I had lost sight of the bugger in the trees.  I was sure he was gone for the day.  It would have been a shame since that meant the dogs would have to stay in the house  until we had dealt with this.  My wife (the one with the prybars) saw him down at the bottom of the hill, heading for the creek.  He was still just walking along, but somewhere between 70 and 90 meters away--downhill.

Long story short, the BossLady hit him with the third shot.   :o

I had to scramble down the hill to dispense with the bugger.

Did I mention, I have no problem with her collecting prybars?    :ahhh :ahhh

That story just makes me glad we don't have rabies in the UK.  Tell your wife, good shootin', and buy her the big Fubar.  :D
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Good point on the bats, however it's not the classic rabies that people think of.  http://www.bats.org.uk/pages/bats_and_rabies.html#A2

Love the last FAQ on that page... Can I kill the bat if it bites me?  :D

That is of course if your primary instinct didn't kick in at the time and the bat in now somewhat thinner and slimier than when it attacked  ::)

You don't know the half of it.

A couple years ago, a raccoon came staggering through the barn.  She knew he wasn't right, but the dogs were on him in a minute.  She was picking stalls and raced out to the commotion. She pinned the raccoon to the ground with her pitchfork, pulled the Jack Russells off and shooed the German Shepherd away.

After that, she raced back for (wait for it)...

the gun and finished him off.  Because of the dog interaction, she called the state.  Testing showed it to be positive for rabies.  Luckily she was unscratched.  The dogs were re-vaccinated and got a 60 day confinement.

Those Minnesotans, they're a hardy breed...

I can vouch for the hardy Minnesotan part.My son in law is a native and my daughter and grand daughter are adopted Minnesotans....wind chills of -100,it takes a stout soul to brave that, and lutefisk.
