I bought an 18650 capable Solarforce L2 R2 5-mode last month and 3 days after receiving it bought another.

They are a fantastic value for the money.  Well built and have the advantage of being Surefire thread compatible.

Cheers guys I may just invest in my first 123a torch I think a two level would suit me ideally .Given the lithium go boom thing I will get protected re-chargeables and some decent cells for back up

Lithium cells are safe to use as long as you only use new batteries and avoid unprotected made in China batteries.

yes I have been using AW's and trustfire  lithium for 4 years+ single and multiple configuration and I have never had a problem, one brand I wouldn't recommend are ultrafire I found many a dead cell after just a short time.

What size cell?

The regular L2 can take a 17670 Li-Ion and an 18650 body version is available (that is what both of mine are).

If you are talking about a short body, then yes, you can get a small body that takes a 16340 Li-Ion. It's referred to as the L2M.
It will not work with a primary CR123A cell as the P60 drop-in requries a minimum 3.7V to operate (CR123A primary is 3.0V)
