Executive Nail File Shape
on: May 05, 2009, 09:55:41 AM
It's funny I'm going on 8 years of owning an Executive, and I just now after a year of SOSAK/MT finally thought to ask the question, what's up with the shape at the end? Is it supposed to be a place to rest your finger to control the file better? Or is it something else? I've always wondered.

I think it's a phillips driver  ???
I nipped the end off a little (as I usually do  :D) to make it into a fine flathead driver, but it works on some crossheads too.

If you're talking about the indents along the edges near the end of the nail file and not the very tip of the file itself, one side is needed to get to the nail nick on the scissors... the other side is just for looks.  That's my theory.    :)

If you're talking about the tip of the nail file, then it's just a bit pointy so it can be a phillips screwdriver or to remove junk from under the nails.  Also, just my theory.  :)

I EDCd an Executive for decades before discovering the world of online SAK collecting forums.  I don't carry an Executive anymore (well, not more than a few times a year, and then it's normally a Director instead) but for my money, the nail file on the Executive / Director is still the best nail file and nail cleaner that Vic ever made.  If the Executive had a combo tool it would be more tempting.  I know that a mod can be done to add a 58mm combo tool to an Executive, but that's not the same...

Most of the time now I edc a Minichamp on my key ring in one pants pocket plus a larger SAK in another pocket (these days, it's either a Solder, an SI or a Farmer) and the nail file / cleaner on the Minichamp does just fine, although it's still a second place finish to the Executive's nail file (IMNSHO).

The 74mm really we're a neglected line :(

I always thought Vic should have done more with that chassis :-\

Although I carried one as my only SAK for decades, in retrospect I think that the problem with the 74mm Vics is that the main blade is too small to attract a following amongst those who like "big" knives.  Although it's almost as long as the main blade on 84mm Vics, it's obviously a lot less "beefy" and has little "belly".

True, but it's just that bit larger than a 58mm to make it your 'main' knife if you work in an office enviroment or something, where as a 84-91mm might just be too big for a suit pocket :)

It's funny that when I asked Victorinox in an email what the unusual shape was (in great detail) they answered back (paraphrase): "The tip is for cleaning under fingernails. Thanks for your inquiry."

I am still carrying this great knife as well :tu: I have used the tip of the file to scrape at stuff as well :) The size of the blade is just about right for me when I don't want to overkill with the SuperTool :tu:

I always thought it was a combination nail cleaner and phillips tip.  I guess I was doubling it's functions...  (Or finding new uses...   :D)

I like the Executive.  It's a nice, compact little knife.  Unfortunately, I tend to neglect it too much.  Hmmm...  Maybe a good Saturday carry..?

I'm with you.  I like the Executive a lot.  If it just had a combo tool, it would be in my EDC rotation more.

That said, I EDC'd one as my only edc knife for decades until I discovered SOSAK and other forums and learned that I really NEED an opener tool. :D
