Knives are Confusing!
on: May 11, 2009, 09:05:25 PM
figured I'd pitch this one out to the collective, see if anyone knows of my dream knife, hidden away on some poorly designed website.

I'd like to get a knife that has a swept blade, like a cold steel scimitar/talwar/espada, or spyderco chinook, about 4" long, with a blade flipper index opener and an axis/arc lock style lock. VG-10 would be a good target steel

does it exist? will it ever exist? am I insane?

thanks!  :drink:

of note; I'm looking mainly at VG-10 because I want something that'll take a fine edge and is corrosion resistant, not necessarily because I want a super steel with amazing edge retention or anything.

Knives are Still confusing, but another question for the collective;

has anyone handled both a SOG Vulcan and a BM Griptilian?

or just a Vulcan?

appreciate any comment,

-Danny

Have a Mini Griptilian for EDC and have once handled a SOG Vulcan. Prefer Benchmade over SOG here, but the Vulcan is a pretty good knife too. In fact it is the first knife to come to my mind when I read your question. Here´s a (German, sorry) Video on the SOG Vulcan, but it might still be interesting for you to see the lock and size of the knife.

While not as upswept  as a scimitar blade shape Benchmade does make a nice clip point blade (like a buck 110) with an axis lock in the Harley Hardtail.

blade flipper index opener and an axis/arc lock style lock.

As far as I know these two things do not exist together in any production knife. Flippers are almost exclusively limited to liner or frame locks. I say just buy the Chinook.

Narrow down your want list to one major item. Do you want a piston-type lock? an upswept blade? etc. This allows you to take a broader view of the current market and then narrow down your choices when you have a good selection.

that hardtail looks fairly nice, actually.

a bit out of my price range though, and I may be struck down for pocketing it (I ride a BMW  :drink:)

spoonrobot; the vulcan is one (though only, as far as I can tell) example of a flipper combined with a piston lock.

No I know better. How that slipped by me I have no idea. I even handled the dang thing at a BLADE last year.  ::)

It was nice. Keep in mind I'm used to carrying thin Spyderco folders.

A little thick for me but I liked the ergos and the lock seems nice and strong. My main gripe is with the price point. I understand piston-type locks and their pricing but @$117 just seems a bit much for VG10 and FRN. That is way into ZDP/S30V and G10 price range for me. I'd snap one up for $75-$85 though.

I played with a vulcan, too bulky for my taste. Price is higher than others too it seems.

That's good to hear.  :)

How are you finding that handle?  Some seem to find it cheap feeling?

it does feel a bit cheapish, yeah, but relative to other offerings it actually is a bit cheaper, so I'm ok on that front.

mostly it's just the hollow sound it makes, like a cheap car interior, structurally it is sound and I have no complaint of it's gripping qualities or deformation under load.

feels really great in the hand, too. very well balanced and pleasant.
