Projected value of multitools
on: June 02, 2009, 11:49:13 PM
So some of us have those special "keeper" multitools that never see the light of day..hidden away in the back of toolboxes, drawers, and closets. I have to put it out there...are we cheating ourselves by not putting to use that hard to get multi by thinking it will be worth millions one day? Or are we right to keep the special ones pristine and untouched?

What do you think our collections will be worth in let's say 100 years? Think your greatgrandkids will sell them all for a quarter in a garage sale?

i have absolutely no will power to just collect multi tools. every tool i buy (unless i have 2 of them) gets used.
i have given tools to people and have discovered them all rusted up in their rain exposed tool boxes or just simply un-used.
NO WAY i'm leaving my babies to some unappreciative bunch of grand kids. ::)

I honestly don't think any MT will ever be worth vastly more than they do today. Think about 100 year old tools nowadays, are they worth a lot ?

I do this a lot.  :( I can't/won't use a multi unless I have two of them. If I do have two, then I don't mind beating on it.

I personally can't see the point in having a stash of unused tools.  Like it's been mentioned, I really doubt they will ever be of some significant value and it just seems a waste of a perfectly good tool to me.

Absolutely none.  Having a tool just sitting there just seems a waste to me.

Its good to stash old Gerbers(and SOGs?) so that you can show your grandchildren that these companies could once produce quality tools...  :D

Ahh this old chestnut  :D :D

OK most of the tools I have are purely collectables , I have concentrated on retired MT's & models that were destined to failure(Autotool , Flair etc).So I am more than happy with using my Spirit(already has a deep scratch in the handel after 2 weeks use), Surge, Core,Swisschamp & keeping the Tools that are no longer made in the Plastic Tool Treasure Chest. I do not feel the need to use a tool to value owning it . They do get handled a lot though  :D

The issue of appreciation in regards to value  . I have recently acquired a Al Mar 4X4 & Quickclip & up till a couple of months ago they were getting $250us+ for good examples but my 2 cost $100-130us & they are practically new 8) 8). I think given the economic troubles people have sold there collectables & the price of Al Mar's has temporally dropped
I would think though they will go back up in value. I think given the growth of multitool.org & general interest in MT's has increased, prices will also go up in the rarer tools.

Me, I do not care if my MT's sky rocket in value. Given the price MT's go for in the Australian retail(shops) market, every tool I buy here or online is a bargain  :D >:D

There isn't a tool in my fleet I won't use.
I doubt very much that any are really going to be worth more than what I paid for them.  I am betting that the value will be sentimental.
The one tool I would consider to be a collector and valuable outside my stock I assume Mr. Leatherman himself has and that would be the first one that ever came off his assembly line.  Hopefully he has it anyhow.  :)

I would say some tools will gain more than others :) but I collect other things besides tools that aren't used so I don't mind having a few unused tools :D I try and use most of them but lately I  gotten so many that I can't use them all ::) :o :D Plus I enjoy hunting them down and finding good deals on them :tu:

There are certain tools like the Al Mar plier tools that I'd consider collectable and have a significant increasing value.

But tools like the Charges, Swisstools, PowerLocks...I doubt those will ever draw huge prices...even 100 years from now.  There are simply hundreds of thousands of them out there (although some variants my be exceptions)...whereas tools made 100 years ago were made by hand and they are VERY few of them floating around out there.

Certain tools like my Elsener Signature Swisstool and Australian Army Swisstool I do not use . Even though they both show signs of wear . If I loose them I would have a real job replacing them . Lets face it how many others have you seen ? I think theres 4 signed Swisstools on this site and they took some finding and I've never seen another Australian Swisstool for sale yet . Ontop of that both tools have alot of kindness attached to them .

In 100 years time ? I'm not sure they will be worth alot of money but if they are with their boxes and unused  :o

I have carried my AutoTool in the glove box of my car for years and use it for something quite often.

I only have two beaters. All the rest are unused.

I don't care about their value. I don't plan on selling them for a profit. I collect them because I find them neat devices of ingenuity.

I use all my tools, it seems a shame not to, but I am careful with the ones that would be difficult to replace and I can understand why some people don't use their valuable ones.

As to their value, I'll never sell them so it doesn't matter to me :)

Other than a few limited edition pieces, most MTs won't go up in value, so there's not much sense in collecting them for investment purposes. Personally, I have no use for a tool that I don't use. So all my tools are users. I like it that way. If I find a tool just sits around and doesn't get used, I sell it, trade it, or give it away, to make room for something I'll use.
