Got a Zippo as a father's day present.
on: June 22, 2009, 05:33:15 AM
My wife surprised me with my first ever Zippo lighter.  It has my name engraved on the back and everything.  Very cool.  I always wanted one of these, but always heard about how Bics were better because the fluid doesn't evaporate, no flint replacement or wick replacement, etc.  Well, she got me one anyway and I love it.  There is just something traditional about a Zippo, you know?  I have to get some lighter fluid for it, as she also got me a leather carrying case for it and ran out  of money.  I am not a smoker, and am guessing it probably will be running out of fluid alot, so I am not planning to fill it often.  Maybe before a party, or before we go camping.  However, I plan to EDC it, if nothing else just so i can reach into my pocket and fondle it like a worry stone, the Father's day present my wife gave me.
Just thought I'd share.

Congrats on the wonderful gift! Part of the reason I like Zippo lighters is the fiddle factor, it's fun to flip open/closed and makes a nice noise. I EDCed a Zippo for a several months a few years back. I usually only had to refill it about every week and a half, this with using it to light 20-25 cigarettes a day. So if you don't smoke it should last a fair bit before it needs to be refilled!

I'm not a smoker but i always carried one on me or real close by. Just a standard brushed chrome i bought at Target for 9 bucks. I use it for lighting the grill, fireworks, candles, doobies.....jk :D

Zippo makes one with a 4 leaf clover embedded in it. That's the one i want.

I've carried my Zippo for years (whether smoking or not) and love it to bits.  mine however was a gift from my Father.  :)

I don't smoke too. Had a zippo once (don't know where it is now) given to me by a friend. Just so I could do zippo tricks. You know, like squeezing it vertically hard, slide your fingers down and it's opened. No fluid, just for show. Great gift you got there.

I don't smoke and I carry one.  A brushed steel Zippo with some black duct tape wrapped around it for grip (and to use if I need a peice).  I fill it every two weeks or so...don't worry about spontaneous evaporation, just give it a spark every few days until it looks like it needs to be refilled.

Another little tip is to store a spare flint under the pad :tu:

I EDC a zippo but doesn't smoke. Put a thin piece of bike tire inner tube around the seam to prevent the fluid from evaporating.

I don't know if this is just my imagination or what, but zippo's new less smelly fluid seems evaporate faster than plain naphtha (i.e. coleman fuel, ronsonol, generic lighter fluid).

I use Ronsolol...cheaper and more available than the Zippo fluid.  Never had a problem, and no odor unless I overfill it and it leaks out.  I also use it in my hand warmer in the winter!

Zippo's hand warmer? I wondered how well does it work, since here if it's cold enough to use hand warmer I'd have gloves on already, no place for it to fit really. Also heard the catalyst only last a year.

Not a Zippo hand warmer...and old Jon-E hand warmer!  This thing is from the 1950's and the catalyst part still works...and even if it was replaced at one time, it wasn't any time recently.  It's good for a coat pocket, and literally is hot or warm for 20 hours or so on one filling.  I can't vouch for the ones being produced now (I assume they are made overseas), but the one I own is solid.

Great pressie  :tu:

I EDC a small gas one at the moment but even reading this thread makes me want to go get one of my zippos and fiddle with it lots! I love the feel, smell and sound of them. I think they are just one of those truly iconic designs which have stood the test of time. I think it also helps greatly that they have a good customer service policy where repairs are concerned - the continued existence of the company may well be a testament to that fact.  :)
