1986 Cabela's PST
on: April 22, 2007, 04:58:14 AM

Digging through the archives earlier this week, I came across an old Cabela's catalog from the spring of 1986.

There was lot's of interesting old stuff from 20 years ago. Electronic fish-finders were a new thing, big and clunky looking. Def's favorite Q-beam light was featured prominantly. There were no such things as GPS units yet. Also new was this nifty little gadget on page #95........

Here's a close up of the PST ad:

Pretty quaint huh? What strikes me most is what you don't see: Nowhere is the word "Leatherman" even mentioned. There was no brand name recognition yet.
Funny.  :)

It's funny- I would have thought that by '86 the PSt would have caught one, well enough at least to have had the name mentioned?

When did the ParaTool (according to SOG, the second multitool on the market) start production?

The patent for the ParaTool mechanism was applied for in 1992, issued in 1993. Almost ten years after Tim's tool came out.

Well I guess there's no point in pushing a brand if there is only one out there then.

I can see that the photograph of the tool in the ad was taken a couple years prior to 1986. Notice the drop point knife blade instead of the clip point blade that came on the millions of later Leatherman PST tools. Also no lanyard attachment piece, and the use of smooth rivets instead of knurled pivot screws. All of these say this is a very very early example.

(If you've got one, get out your own PST and compare)

Lifetime warrantee?  When did Leatherman change it to 25 years?

I dunno.  ???

It's been 25 years for as long as I've been keeping track.

It's interesting that the catalog says it is warranted for life to the original purchaser.  I'll bet that pisses off alot of eBay folks!

Speaking of the 25-year warranty on Leatherman tools....If my math is correct none have expired yet. The PST came out in 1983, so the its silver anniversary won't be until next year.

I wonder if L'man will do anything special?

Didn't they already do something special with the limited edition $150 PST last year?

Must be the Legacy PST is just a Cabelas exclusive promotion kind of thing? It's not shown anywhere on the Leatherman website, nor did they "announce" it or anything.

Seems like either Cabelas or Leatherman (or both) would have hyped it up more than they did?

That's an interesting speculation.  I very much doubt that either Cabelas or Leatherman will let LM's 25th anniversary go by without some kind of special offering.

I wonder if I can pry any details out of my contact at Leatherman...?
