Camillus steel.
on: July 10, 2009, 01:05:09 AM
Ok, so I just posted about how I finally got a Camillus "demo" camping/scout knife.  The all steel version.  I have some questions maybe you guys can help me out with.
1)One of the biggest complaints of the older demos was that their back springs broke.  I read somewhere that back then they made the spring from the same steel they used to make the blades.  Is this still the case?  Mine is not a nailbreaker either, which was another complaint about the springs, so I wonder if the different spring tolerances means they upgraded them.
2)What steel is used to make the main blade?  It took a decent edge for the little sharpening I got to do on it, and since I just got it, I don't know how it will hold it's edge in heavy use.  Anyone know what steel this is?
3)The awl blade is not an awl on mine.  The end has been ground so that the tip is a small flat head screwdriver.  Was this common toawrds the end, or is this a mod?

LH,

Wish I could help you out more but these particular Camillus pieces I have limited knowledge on, all I can add as to your questions is that the blade steel is likely either 420HC or 440A. I have never found a definitive answer yet on which steel was Camillus' primary stainless blade steel used in their regular production folders.
