S30V, made in US, under $40
on: July 30, 2009, 08:29:33 PM
Don't know how long this has been available, but I just heard about it:

http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=GB01643G

Nice sheepsfoot blade, light at 3.5 oz, lockback, Kraton over FRN handle - what's not to like?

Available elsewhere for as little as $35, this could well be my first S30V knife.

that's a really decent looking knife.  In s30v it's probably a good performer as well.  I use to have one of the original ez-outs.  Price seems good too.

It is rather good looking, isn't it?  Looks like it'd be a great hard work knife.

Kinda hesitant to admit it, but looks do play a part in my knife selections.

If selection was based only on pure functionality, then I'd probably own nothing but Spyderco and Byrd.  ;>

Hope this is a sign of Gerber decide to spent more money in the actual product instead of marketing dept. They also have a 154cm fixed blade that looks pretty good.

Who knows, maybe they'll turn things around.

neat looking knife.
i've had a gerber 450 EZ outs with a PE for probably 10 years or so. the weight, or lack of, is amazing. b/c of this it is my primary hunting/ pack knife. if that S30V steel is as good as i hear that knife is a great buy at that price. i don't know the type of steel in mine but it touches up very easey and holds the edge extremely well.
the handle material and design really make this knife a winner. you can still keep a good hold on it when wet or bloody. it's and easey knife to cleanup and care for too.
yesterday i tried a few red box BM's around this price point. honestly they were nowhere as smooth to open or close and maybe a little heavier IMH.

yeah I see we are getting some redline benchmades soon.  I have perused a couple of youtube reviews and they were not all that favorable.  I've never owned a benchmade before but might try one when they arrive.
I have to say though the more I look at that Gerber the more I like it.  I have to agree that looks plays a role in blade selection.

I really like the shape of that knife as a utility type blade...and the better steel

might see if i can find a bargain on one

and I like this one even better

Nice looking knife (and great price also!), I just wish it had a plain edge, but is just personal preference  ;).

That knife gets a lot of good reviews - most everyone who doesn't hate all Gerber products seems to like it.  Especially backpackers and other outdoor oriented types.

I was reading a thread on another forum where people were debating the merits of various $200+ knives: edge retention, cutting ability, ergonomics, etc.  Anyway, the funny thing about it was this:  turned out that very few of the guys on that thread actually EDCed those expensive knives.

Most left their expensive knives at home to EDC something less costly - and several of them EDCed a Gerber EZ Out!

awe gee they have it in black to huh?  love it.  You know I've always respected Gerber's line of old knives.  I used to have ez-outs and a couple of Gator's and they were great knives!  This one I am going to keep my eye's open here in Canada for it.  Maybe we'll get lucky and Canada Tire will pick up a batch.  Thanks again for posting it!
