Douk Douk?

I've had my eyes on these on and off for a few years, but I never took the plunge. The idea was nice, but the blade shape just wasn't for me. Luckily a few days ago, Zag had this one for sale, and I snatched it right up

I was expecting a stout backspring, but I was surprised just how robust the spring actually is. Considering how the handle is just a folded piece of sheet steel, I was very surprised at how well this feels in hand. The biggest shock though was the size. I didn't realise these were such chunky fellers.

These do feel like very capable knives, and I'm really glad I got this one to try out. I'm not disappointed and see this one putting in a fair bit of work over the next few decades. The only really minor gripe I had - new knife, too shiny. Being a carbon steel blade I put it to work on the first task all my carbon steel knives - fresh fruit

... and we're just starting to see a faint hue developing as it starts it's journey to looking like it should  ;)

Much better  :D

Who else has got one, and what's your thoughts?
Don't forget the piccies  :pok: :D

Never could quite get into them.  After handling one at one of the early meet-ups I just didn't warm to the sheet steel handle.  I know others like them more than I do though. :D

Granted they're not the most ergonomic knives in the world, but it's a lot better than I expected. For the price, volume and weight, they are an extremely capable knife if my first impressions are correct. Wouldn't want to use one is sub-zero temperatures though

Now I have the feel of one I'm tempted to get the standard blade style too at some point.

Yeah, I can see them not being for everyone. I'm a sucker for a big lightweight knife though. Still a fan of the CS Bushman for that reason  :)

I didn't realize Douk Douks came in a sheepsfoot flavor, 50ft. I may have to pick one up here in the very near future. I know the clip point variety comes in a smaller option; do you know if the sheepsfoot one does too?

No idea mate, sorry. Until I saw this I didn't realise they did a sheepsfoot version either

I did collect actively knives (somewhat half heartedly though) before getting into using multitools, so I'll give you that one  :D Having said that, many of those knives have now gone and I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the knife box that hasn't been used at some point. All the "let's keep this pristine" stuff has been sold, traded, or put to use  :)

I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 or 70 knives/SAKs/MTs, and every single one has been used to one extent or other. Most get stored because they're seldom used, and I am exceedingly lazy when it comes to selling or trading online. I don't collect for collectivity's sake or value. My carry preference changes frequently, too, so it's a minor luxury to go out to the garage and sift through a brimming .50 calibre ammo box for what suits my mood.

So, maybe I'll run out and grab my demo knife, and carry it for grins and giggles. As soon as I put away my Opinel No. 8...

the sheepsfoot looks a bit nicer than the standard clip. Are these knives as scarily sharp as their reputation?

This one is sharp, but not stupidly sharp - there's a very slight unevenness on the grind. I reckon with a little work, yeah - scary sharp would be very achievable. I'm happy with the sharpness on it for now though  :)

 Sorry, skipped right by your comment  :-[ I'm kind of the same, just more mindful of those that never make it out of the box ... for me there's no point in them being there as (for me) they obviously don't make the grade. For some reason I'm happier to let plain folders or fixed blades just sit there

I used to have one of the small 160mm Douks Douks and it was far more comfortable to use than I expected it to be; the blade took an absolutely wicked edge while being within UK legal carry restrictions.  Down side was that the handle came pre-scratched and chipped, which saved me a lot of tedious knife handle scratching and chipping.  I'm still thankful for that.  However, it's a good slip joint knife that feels a lot safer than, say, a Opinel No 5 or other Opinel friction folder.  You can also get the 160mm size with a sheepfoot blade; it's stocked by Couteaux Berthier as a Stylet Douk Douk - not sure it'll work, but here's a link - http://www.couteaux-berthier.com/boutique/liste_produits.cfm?type=150&code_lg=lg_fr&num=201 - One word of warning, the shipping costs from France to the UK were high and I wonder whether this might be the case for shipping to the US and Canada.
