I would use the hell out of that, but not too much, because if you have to send it in for warranty what would you get back.  I would keep pics of it in the packaging to have for posterity, but would open and use it.

Actually I do agree with what Benner is saying on this, as well as with Zack and DTH.  This is a tool with a bonus upgraded blade and deserves to be used and enjoyed.  I'm not much of a shelf/drawer queen type and when I got this Wave had no intentions of selling it for a profit (like Benner said its just a tool and is not going to make me rich) the thought didn't even enter my mind. I am also not a collector so keeping it sealed for life is not something I could do.  When I first saw this I thought it was a great price for a Wave combo kit (regular Waves go for $79 - $110 at other shops locally, and I do not already have one.  Then I noticed S30V on the blade and that made it a incredible deal too good to pass up.
The novelty of finding this error will soon wear off and I can assure you guys that unless I sell this, IT WILL BE OPENED AND USED :D

Dunc, no I haven't but I didn't expect to receive any as this is just a tool with a different blade.  Unless your a diehard collector its not really worth that much despite what some might think.  What good is it if you can't use it.

From memory Kwakster gave away some S30V blades too members here  & too get the blade too fit a Wave, required a small amount of filing  . If there is a bit of fiddling to get the blade to fit a Wave , it is surprising that this accident has occurred

Those were 154CM blades.
We never received S30V spare blades from Leatherman, even after repeated requests.

So the blades for the Wave and Charge series are not interchangable.  That is strange ???,  That would kinda rule out a simple production/ picked the wrong part error wouldn't it?.

If i recall correctly, they fitted on the tool fine but they wouldn't lock up properly so it is still possible a mistake happened, as it's unlikely they test the locks on each tool.

Thanks for clarifying Kwakster  :tu:
BTW do you think the S30V would slot straight into a Wave

It is possible that it is a 420 stainless blade, that was simply engraved with S30V on it...

FWIW, after closely looking at the pics in the OP, methinks that this is VERY likely.

The opening slot (cutout) tells the tale:

http://www.equipped.org/pp/pic1362.htm
http://www.equipped.org/lm_charge-wave.htm ("The Blades" heading, 3rd paragraph)

"The opening slot on the Charge 154CM plain edge blade is larger than that of the Wave. This is because the rough Charge blade is laser cut while the Wave blade is fine blanked (stamped out of sheet). The laser cutting allows them to get closer to the edge of the blade."

The (true) S30V blade has the same larger hole/cutout as the 154CM:

So, bad news is, this seems to be a regular 420 blade that's been wrongly ID'd. GOOD news is, it's still an "error" (from a collector's viewpoint), and whatever value it may have probably wasn't THAT compromised by unpackaging it.

(Right now I'm wondering if there are any Charges out there with 420 blades in 'em.  ??? )

Interesting analysis EM745,  just adds to the list of possible theories.  The only real way to find out is to use the blade and see how well it retains its edge.
So in theory if you spot any Charges with a smaller, smooth opening hole best beware as you may be getting a 420HC blade.  Huh, gets more confusing. ???
