Assisted Opening Blades

Poll

AO blades are:

Great! Never without one in my pocket.
Interesting, carry one occasionally.
Fun to play with, but don't carry one.
Silly, a solution is search of a problem.
Horrible, I have enough to worry about without adding  accidental discharge of a knife in my pocket.

One of my favorite looking folders that ZT.  :tu:  I'd love one but just can't part with $300 yet to make
it happen.  :-\

Like a lot of people on here I think they're fun to play with but for an EDC I don't see the advantage of it over something like a good Spyderco. It's really not any faster and less safe. I had one for a day but returned it when I pulled it out of my pocket and the safety was off. It may not have been a problem but if it's that close to the family jewels I aint taking no chances.  :o :o

I don't find them any more dangerous than a non-AO folder. I've been "bitten" by my non-AO blades more than my AO's. It all depends on the detent strength and the ZT has goof detent. Some AO's increase the detent strength. But you're right about the deployment speed. A good folder, especially flippers like the Kershaw Skyline, will deploy just as fast as an AO.

I now have knives with SOG's SAT, Kershaws Speedsafe and Benchmades Nitrous opening systems and I will be doing a bit of a write up on my thoughts on these soon.  What others are there out there?

CRKT outburst.

I have the CRKT Folding Hissatsu with Outburst and man does it open with authority! The torsion bar is strong on this baby!

I thought I was done with assisted openers after I sold my kershaws, but now I got a sog trident coming. From what I hear and handling of powerassist, the sog assist is pretty weak compare to kershaw thou, is that the case?

Is that similar to any of the others?

I *think* it's similar to benchmade's, with a spring bar along the handle spine to push the blade out.

My Flash II was weak, but my Twitch was very quick, probably the fastest AO I have handled.

My sog's are slower than my kershaw's.  My sog aegis as I remember has a spring like this one.

My Aegis was really slow.  You are correct on the spring, it looked exactly like that.

I actually think that my Flash II is slower due to the spring.  This is because you have to overcome the tension for the spring to kick in and when it does it's pretty slow.  It would be far quicker springless IMO.  This is certainly not the case with the Nitrous or speedsafe system.

I found if you really flick the Blackout like you were opening it without the Speedsafe, it was the fastest knife opening I had ever experienced, practically wanted to jump out of your hand.

It is very rapid.  :D  Not as quick as the Nitrous though, but I actually prefer the speedsafe.  All will be revealed in my mini review.  :D

I think I understand why it's not fast now. If you look at the disassembly video I posted in the powerassist thread, you'll see what's preventing the blade from firing is actually the spring on lock bar. If the pivot spring is stronger the balance would be lost and you won't be able to keep it closed anymore. The lock spring is dinky sized so they can't make it strong enough to counter a strong pivot spring.

Unless I am misunderstanding (very very likely!  :D) wouldn't that mean though that the blade would open by moving the lock bar?  Clearly it doesn't do that as that would be an Auto.
I'm back!!
