HIJKLMNO Do you carry any?
on: October 26, 2009, 03:31:32 AM
For those of you who are thinking "what kinda crack is she on now?", it's water (H2O)  ;)

I almost always carry it and have obsessed for many hours as to what is the best method. I now have quite a few bottles and flasks knocking around here and have come to a few conclusions about them which I thought I'd share.

Sigg bottles - lovely quality iconic items that are a bit of a pain really! The alu ones which are coated inside cannot be thrown in a dishwasher. This is useful when you just need to give them a really thorough clean. I do have the traveller flask they do in stainless steel which is one of my favourites. The bottom corners have a tendency to get crushed in if you drop them but it hasn't affected mine other than cosmetically. These carry 600ml which is enough for an average outing without major exertion!
My main gripe with Siggs is the standard thread on them makes it a little slow going to get the thing open, and not too easy with one hand.

Plastic bottles: There are various debates about not using plastics such as Lexan which leach BPA (bisphenol-A, a chemical which mimics oestrogen) in to your water (understandably) so choosing a plastic bottle made of polyethylene and polypropylene plastics seems to be a safer option if you are concerned about this. I'm no expert on this one by a long shot and still own and use a few Nalgene bottles. They new ones are apparently BPA free. The best EDC size for me is a narrow mouthed 500ml one. I find the wide mouthed bottles are just asking me to throw water all down myself  ::)
I have a couple of 1l bottles for big days out too - one for me, one for the dog  ;)

Stainless steel: The newer SS bottles are lean, mean and green. They don't have anything nasty in them, no coatings and if from the right company are recycled/recyclable products  :tu:
Perhaps the most notable company doing this is Kleen Kanteen. They seem to have an excellent reputation and I would have invested in them except for the price here in the UK. I found a great company making a similar product here called http://www.onegreenbottle.com/
I have a small 350ml bottles from them which I can throw in a pocket. It's a great piece of kit but the sports cap wasn't excellent. They sell several other options so this wasn't a biggy and their service was very good.

So do you guys carry water and if so, how? :D

I use a swingtop bottle like this.

I've thought about using a smaller grolsch bottle but I think it may be considered an open container.

I like this thread because I am still trying to figure out what to carry water in that is both environmentally conscious, safe, and reliable.  I do carry water all the time, but I'm still trying to find bottles that will fit in the cages on my bike.  The regular cheap plastic bottles that they sell for those are alright but they get nasty quickly and I don't have a dishwasher.  I thought about SS but I don't know what kind to get that will hold about 500 ml of water or a little more but still fit in the water bottle cages on my bike.  And are a bit easier to clean and keep clean.  Mostly I just keep water in them but occasionally I put in gatorade or something like that.  So carry on...I'm taking notes. :D

I carry my H2O in a litter Nalgene wide mouth with a spill guard and firefly led flashlight/cap on top, enough drinking water for most occasions. Oh mine's bpa free, it's made out of opaque white plastic.

Sigg bottle for me.  I like it because it is flatter than most bottles and it fits in my Remora Gearslinger very easily.

Depends.  For volume, it's hard to beat Camelbaks, but the taste is a little off and the bite valve can pull off and make a mess.

For urban carry, I prefer Siggs.  The flask doesn't carrry much, but the 1 liter bullets are much bulkier.  Never had an issue with washing (maybe I don't clean it well... ???)

For roughing it, I go with Nalgenes.  Most are now BP-A free.  Why use them? Tough as nails.  I've driven tent pegs with one.  In cold temps, they are more "mouth friendly" (ie you won't freeze to the bottle).  Finally, my UV sterilizer fits the opening of Nalgenes but won't fit in a Sigg.

All work, none are perfect.  :(

Hey Mike,
Do those bottles fit in your water bottle cages on your bike (assuming you have water bottle cages on your bike and use the onegreenbottles for that purpose)?  :) I am very interested in those since you and Nuph mentioned them.

I'll be getting a 750ml one soon, and that should fit ok :)

Do they have a 750 ml one?  I just looked at the site and they seem to go from 500ml to 800ml.

Sorry, yeah it's an 800ml :-[

I'm just so used to Sigg's being 750ml ::)

It does say in the blurb about them being suitable for bike rides http://www.onegreenbottle.com/800ml_stainless_steel_BPA_Free_water_bottles

You should be able to get the Kleen Kanteen version for a good price over there - I think they are a US company which is why they are pricey here.

I know it's an unpronounceable word composed of random capital letters, like all the signs in IKEA say.  :P

With all the BPA crap going on, we changed all of our water bottles to Camelbak Better Bottle with Bite Valves (500ml & 750ml).

I use a camelbak 750ml wide mouth. Still use my PC 800ml thou, from what I read BPA is only released when heated so cold water is fine.

I saw those. Nice and light but they looked like they might leak if they lie down or are compressed...do they?

Isn't it also released when you freeze them?

My two never did. In my briefcase it would have resulted in a mess, so I tested them hardly before using. Full, pressed with a reasonable strenght... not a drop.
