Arrrgggh! Blade play.
on: November 12, 2009, 04:54:36 PM
Ok, what is it with me?  My Ti-lite has developed some really annoying vertical play and despite all my best efforts I just can't cure it.  That means I now have this Ti-Lite, a Spyderco Pacific Salt and a SOG Flash Tanto all with vertical play and as some of you may know, this bugs the hell out of me!  :ahhh

So my question is this; Am I alone here or does vertical play bother you as well?  Side to side doesn't at all, but vertical for me is a real knife pet peeve.
I'm back!!

If I can feel it when using the knife then yes it's annoying.  If it's only when I wiggle the blade and can feel a tiny amount of play then no it doesn't bother me.

I have a real issue with it I know.  :D  The bottom line is that all three of those knives shouldn't have any play at all, but mine do.  If they were all like that I think I could live with it, but the perfectionist in me want's it to be as it should.

Ben I think I'm becoming like you. All the knives I have gotten lately the blade lock up is the first thing I check. Starting not to like any play in the blade at all. I can live with a tiny amount. But I don't like it.

It's a disease I tell ya!  :ahhh :D

Out of those 3 knives I can tolerate it on the Salt as a small amount of play on a lockback isn't a problem and is actually quite normal (no one say any different please!!  :D).  But the Ti-lite is a liner lock and play in those is a big no no in my book, and the Sog has so much play that I can hear it rattling when I shake it.

Apart from this one, they all have arrived like that.  I guess I am just unlucky.

I have emailed CS to see what they say.  I really don't want to run the customs gauntlet ATM, but as it is I just know I won't use it so I might as well have a go.

If you sold or traded it to a US member then we could get it worked on via the warranty.

I checked my Ti-lite and it's good and tight.  Yes it would bug me (vertical) play.  Did you try taking it apart and
checking the stop pin to see if the hole it slides into is still tight or is it too big for the pin and causing movement?

I've got my ti-lite in hand here now...  if I can check something for you let me know.

when you push down on the top of the blade (open, locked) looking at it from the underside your liner lock
it doesn't move back right?  There is no backward movement of linerlock under stress?
The only other thing I could think of to look closely at (if your stop pin is solid in the hole) is the pivot hole assembly itself and make sure everything fits in tight with no movement in the round holes.   :-\

There is no movement in the lock at all.  I am thinking that it is the pivot hole which is a shame as there is very little I can do about it.

Out of interest Sean, does your liner go right over so that the ball touches the liner on the other side?

the other thing I just noticed on mine is my liner lock is 3/4 of the way under the blade.  If I move it ever so
slightly back it does start to have play vertically.  How far does your liner lock travel over the blade?

yeah it's tight no play but the lock is 3/4 not quite touching the other side.  If you force yours over does it tighten it up?

It can't go over as the ball is touching the opposite liner.

I would say your right and that's the problem.  Your out of room and no wear left to adjust.

But I can get it so it's fine by adjusting the pivot.  Then, after a few times opening it, it starts again without the pivot itself loosening off.  I'm guessing the whole pivot is rotating slightly.

it's a real balancing act with liner locks.  They need to be over at least a 1/4 to 1/2 ways so they don't slip the
lock, yet not over touching the other side so they start to wear and have play.   :-\   Unfortunately when you
mail order you can't check it yourself.

That makes sense.  It might be a bit hard to detect something wrong with the naked eye with the pivot?

I have looked really closely and it does seem to rotate slightly in the handles.  Maybe because if it's shape this is causing the problem.

If you guys knew how little this play was you'd all slap me I am sure.  :D
