I use firefox here because it loads quicker than IE.  I can tape on IE and then tap on firefox and even though
firefox was punched last it finds the homepage while IE is still hunting for it.

xmarks is cross browser friendly, and can contain bookmarks and passwords (with an extra key required), and does backup so if you accidentally delete a bookmark you can recover it. I believe it also can be configured with different profiles for different machines.

Firefox flaws tend to get patched rather quickly, and IE flaws are more critical to patch due to integration... yet microsoft seems to take forever to patch them, granted not all, but some flaws have been in the wild/discovered over a year before they even think about fixing them.

What's your level of dependency on windows apps? before I switched I was already using Thunderbird for email, Firefox as browser, OpenOffice as an office suite, Filezilla for FTP, Pidgin for icq/gtalk/msn, Picasa for photo organization.

I adapted and started using Amarok for mp3 player, and a few other apps that I preferred after testing the default and a few of the other optionally available apps.

I've even got some windows apps running inside ubuntu by using Wine, including a few games. It's not always that easy, but if your patient and google, and read help forums, there's usually guides for most things.

Failing that, you can always install Sun Virtualbox and run a windows (95/98/2k/XP/Vista/7/whatever you prefer) Virtual machine for any absolutely cannot lose apps.

Also, I believe there's an option on the Ubuntu live cd to install inside an existing windows partition, from within windows, and thus you lose nothing, and you can switch back and forth with a reboot. You can also boot off the CD and try it out without installing anything.

excellent! I'm not the only Ubuntu user here at MTO either... you should have no trouble finding help with any issues. (it's possible... but the same is true about windows TBH)

I love Ubuntu. Much less buggy than Windows. Great free Apps. The feeling of freedom you get from shedding Microsoft from your life is truly wonderful.

About the only thing I truly miss is ITunes. I've tried all of the various Linux apps for my Ipod, and none of them compare to Itunes.
