Who here are still using IE as their browser?
on: November 22, 2009, 02:54:30 AM
My family and I use Firefox, but when reading MTO forums, I use Internet Explorer (9), I find it easier to use than Mozilla.

IE. Makes no real difference to me... and since it's integrated in Windows there's no point in getting another browser.

They all have vunerabilities and memory leaks anyway. ::)

The whole point is that IE is integrated in the operating system and thus makes it easier to take down the OS vs a non integrated browser.

Aside from that, Microsoft abandoned IE development (including bug fixing) for many years until other browsers such as Firefox started taking part of the market share. Then they rushed out IE7 and now on to IE8 already. As a developer I loath IE, as each version has it's own quirks and flaws that all have to be addressed differently, making my job a nightmare. Especially when something works perfect in all the other standards conforming browsers.

There are loads of other options these days:
Safari http://www.apple.com/safari/
Opera http://www.opera.com/
Chrome http://www.google.com/chrome
Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/firefox

In case you missed it, there was a whole massive anti-trust lawsuit over here in Europe versus Microsoft's bundled browser and media player. They were supposed to have a ballot or similar to allow users to select their browser of choice, not be forced to use IE.

I primarily use Firefox on Ubuntu. When I'm actually using the windows that came with my machine (maybe about once every 3 months or so) I use Firefox there as well.

Vista was a massive failure to me (remember all the news stories about people preferring XP over Vista, and how many major manufacturers were forced to offer a downgrade... which led to Microsoft extending the EOL of the OS.) I see Win7 as a step in the right direction, but I wish Microsoft would concentrate on making a solid OS core, and let other vendors take care of other items. As the saying goes: Jack of all trades, master of none.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I moved over to Firefox quite recently as it loads pages much faster the IE in my experience.

I use IE 7 at work, and use Google Chrome at home.  Its just a simpler interface and I like the layout.

I've used Firefox for years, but now I have the iPhone I might start using Safari a bit more so I can sync bookmarks more easily. Last time I tried Safari though - it was pants, lighter than IE, but maybe a little too light - I installed the latest update when I did iTunes, so maybe I'll give it a go soon.

Anyone persevering with Google Chrome yet?

EDIT: Just re-read Zack's post... so, err, anyone else? :D

Lol. I tried it briefly, and agree that it is a nice browser, but I quickly realised that I've steadily built up bookmarks, shortcuts, customised toolbars etc over years, and really didn't fancy a change.
I used to come here a lot.

I prefer Firefox on my Mac and my PC, but I think it's generally irrelevant what browser you use from a security perspective.  It's much more important to understand your browsing habits, and that certain sites or types of sites are likely to attempt to exploit security holes in the browser or OS you are running.  I don't care for Safari or I.E.

For instance:

PrOn sites in general will have no qualms with attempting to own your machine.
Warez sites will almost certainly attempt to have intercourse with your browser.
Kid sites will invariably attempt to install adware/malware.

Just be careful where you surf, what you click and what you do if you get exploited.  In other words "walk softly and carry a big stick"  Surf responsibly and back it up with a good AV program and one or more anti-spyware scans weekly.

:)

I gave up on IE years ago. Have been using Firefox exclusively in a Win2000 Pro OS. I am considering a change to the Ubuntu OS. Going to need to try it out. Hard drive just crashed on my main computer so maybe now is the time to give Ubuntu a shot.

Firefox for me all the way, especially due to having so many cool and useful addons  :tu:

I like the depth of control you can have over the interface and the speed at which it works. IE is a great big ugly dinosaur IMHO.

Non sequita: does dinosaur really mean "terrible lizard" like I have always believed?

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/09/11/24/2141247/Major-IE8-Flaw-Makes-Safe-Sites-Unsafe

This is somewhat typical of IE.

Frankly this is typical of all internet browsers. IE just takes the most flak being integrated into the best selling OS in the world. >_>;

Which in turn, yes, means they should pay more attention to it... *shrugs*

Though XSS is still rather shoddy for all browsers.

EDIT:
Eh, further pointing out that there is fair media coverage for other browser vunerabilities, just that your average tech geeks only point out IE patches...

I still use IE.

My hands are riddled with arthritis, so I use keyboard shortcuts for a lot of actions instead of using the mouse to press the Submit button.

On a lot of forums (like this one), ALT+S in IE submits a post.  ALT+S in Firefox opens the history.
I know I can hack the Firefox config to change it, but it's a PITA to have to remember to do it when an update wipes out the changes.
