Spyderench discontinued 2010
on: November 19, 2009, 11:04:51 AM
Hi mates!
Spyderco announced to discontinue the T01 in 2010. So, if you´re interested in that tool, maybe it´s a good time to get one.

Shame - but inevitable I guess.

One of my favourite tools, but in all honesty, one of the least practical.

Will they continue the Byrdrench do you know?
I used to come here a lot.

It happens more of less every year, out the slow sellers and comes the new models, although this year is more than usual.

Yes, but mind to huge number of new models in 2009 and the announced ones in 2010.

Chokwe, Chicago, Cat, SageII, ManixII, ManixII CF, Forumknive Native, Ladybug Hawkbill, Terzuola Slipit, Lum Chinese Folder, Urban, UKPK, Stretch (3 versions), Temperance2, Bushcraft, Bug, Leafstorm, JD Smith, Rocklobster, Poliwog G10, Dragonfly G10, ... So it seems the total number of Spydercos stays about the same, they are really busy!

What is the difference between the Spyderench and ByrdRench besides the blade?  I've got a ByrdRench, I'm not really impressed with it and keep it as a novelty.  Same thing with the CRKT Guppie.

I saw this thread and had never heard of the Spyderwrench.  SOOO, I ambled on down to EBAY and picked one up pretty cheap.  I have to say, it's got some engineering flaws, but overall it's a REALLY useful tool!  Really innovative design.  It's really interesting how they integrated so many reusable components.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up!

There are slight differences between the two.  Being picky, the SpydeRench is slightly thinner than the Byrd, the opening hole is a different shape and the Spyder has a file while the Byrd has a rasp.  Modern SpydeRenches are made in Taiwan, while the older ones were made in the US and ByrdRenches are made in China.

Thanks for the info Def.  I've had my ByrdRench for a couple years and actually didn't even know there was a SpydeRench.  I may have been looking at SpydeRenches and thought they were ByrdRenches.  I'm a fan of Spyderco knives but I doubt I will seek out a SpydeRench though.  I have been concentrating on Vic SAK's and Leatherman MT's as of late.  But, you can never say never.  If the opportunity presents itself.......... :D

There is a bit of a comparison between the USA SpydeRench and the ByrdRench here:

I can't comment on the Taiwan SpydeRench as I don't yet have one.
