Frustrated
on: December 07, 2009, 02:17:47 AM
I have been looking for a full blooded Labrador retriever male for me to train for hunting. Well I read in the paper that someone has 3 females for $25 each or OBO. I call them and tell them I am interested. I tell them I have a birthday party that I would like to set up a time to come see them. Well we agree on 7pm and I head out with the intention of buying a pup.

I get there and he immediately pulls a pup out of the kennel. I thought that was fishy but went oh well. I look and think this pup is awful small for 9 weeks old. So as I am looking her over he comments well that one is the runt. I ask to see the others and he says well one sold already and the other one was sold for $200 an hour ago but the guy isnt sure he wants it yet he is from out of state.

By now I am a little upset, but didnt say anything. I tell him no thanks that if the guy doesnt take the $200 dog I was interested but I am only giving them the advertised priced in the paper.

It gets better. A month ago these same dogs were advertised for $75 ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!! A friend sent me a link to the advertisment for them and it was the same guy same house same number. I know these dogs arent cheap but all I am asking is sell for what you are advertising not jack the price up.

So needless to say I am without a pup.

Raptor,
My mom used to breed Labs and if they are selling them that cheap then something is definitely fishy.  I'm not saying that all dogs don't need a good home, but if you want full blooded lab you are looking at minimum of $200 but probably closer to $400 for AKC registered, non-puppy mill labs.  They are fantastic dogs, I've always had them.  Well right now I have a lab/golden retriever mix but I grew up with them, trained them, etc.  I would be looking for a reputable breeder if you want a dog that will not have any inbreeding issues or other problems associated with dishonest breeding practices.  It's despicable to me the people who just go on breeding and breeding and breeding dogs indiscriminately and often with their brothers and sisters and end up with puppies that don't live beyond a few months because of health problems.  I'd also be looking for a written contract from the breeder.  You probably know all this, but that guy you are talking about sounds like a jerk.

Are you anywhere near WV?  If you are, my mom might know of some breeders you could check out.  She doesn't do it anymore, but she still knows lots of people who do.  Good luck on your quest.

These 2 pups looked real good and the other people I talked to had good results with the dogs they bought from him. I guess I just figured they were advertised that way and registered so it was an amazing deal.

No I am not near WV, however I have a relative working on a Chessie for me. That is my first choice. I had one once and he passed away and he was an excellent hunting dog.
