Newbie from Tempe, Arizona...
on: December 07, 2009, 08:34:18 AM
Hello All,

I stumbled onto this site doing a Google search on SOG tools.  I am a member of quite a few different forums over the past 10 years.  :tu:

I have owned mainly Leatherman tools starting with the original PST in 1994.  I later moved up to the SuperTool which felt like a real tool in my hand instead of a small toy.  Later, the ST200 was a natural progression for me of course.  I did not know LM had build dates on the handles until I started reading this forum yesterday.  8)

After carrying the ST200 for years EDC (build date 0701), I bought a LM Crunch (0799).  It is pretty neat and ingenious, but it is not a replacement for the ST200. I use this one as a backup wrench for the ST200.  I keep this one in the truck when needed, but it doesn't get used much.

Later, I bought a LM Surge (0405), which is big and hefty (good thing IMHO), but I do not like it in my pocket because it feels sharp when folded.  I do not use the sheaths--never have, never will--so the Surge just sits in the drawer.

Picked up a Victorinox Swiss Tool.  The build quality is excellent, but again, it too sits in the drawer because I liked the ST200 better.

I also picked up a Schrade Tough Tool 21 from Ebay, but it did not feel very good, so again, in the drawer it goes unused.

After the Core came out, I was worried that Leatherman discontinued the ST200, so I purchased a few ST200s as spares when I found them (1102 and 0204).  I liked the slimmed down handle near the pliers much better than the fat handle and plastic shims.

I liked the original SuperTool, but hated the sharp handles.  I loved the radiused handles of the ST200, but hated the thumb locks.  I ground off the thumb locks flush the day I got it so it functions the same as the original.  I also modified the screwdriver bits to give me a little more reach and ground an angle on the sharp edge towards the bottom.  I have carried the ST200 in my pocket next to my Nokia phone for years.  I always check before leaving the house to make sure I have both!

I use my Leatherman ST200 several times a day--every day--for one thing or another.  I purchased a spare when I considered sending my ST200 into LM to get repaired when the time eventually comes.  I did not want to be without my ST200 for any length of time.

I do not know about you guys, but my GF said I needed to sew pockets on my boxer briefs so I am not without my ST200.   :D

You have stumbled into a great place ;).
I would be interested to see pics of your neutered  :P :P ST200. I was thinking you would probably like the Pulse , but you do not like those locks  .
Should give a Pulse a go if not just for the cracking LM diamond file  :tu: :tu:

Welcome to the insanity!  :D

I never used the ST 200 but I'm a huge fan of the Pulse.  The locks don't bother me much but like Multi Mat I'd love to see pics of yours.  Sounds interesting.

The first version I just smoothed over the locks and it was still possible to use them.  I misplaced my ST200 and obtained a second one within two days because I was going through LM withdrawls.  :D   When I got the second ST200, I completely ground off the locks flush (as pictured) because I really did not use them.  The first ST200 showed up a few days later.   ::)

Yes, but the locks and plier head need to be modified for a sleek profile if (when) I do buy it.

Thank you all for the welcome mat reception.   :climber: :multi:
