Warning danglers in EDC!!!!!
on: December 07, 2009, 03:29:17 PM
Hi guys so this morning I lost "and glad to report found" my new woodsman  :ahhh

I had it attached to a Ti dangler in my front jean pocket,I had just completed an errand for my not so well sister.

When I went to retrieve my woodsman to cut some packing tape it was gone!  :ahhh a sick feeling came over me as I had only got it a couple of days ago  >:( anyway I frantically retraced my movements "important to do this when you lose something" I found it not far from my home in some grass phew! what a relief that was  :tu: I doubt it would have been there much longer as it was just off a path and easily seen being red.

This is what and could happen by deduction  my coat has a draw string at the waist and I'm 99% sure somehow the draw string snagged the dangler and hooked it out of my pocket as I jogged a short distance  >:( I've since removed the dangler and am now looking for a horizontal sheath to carry my woodsman.

Further investigation into this I've found even a sweater could snag the dangler and catapult your prized SAK into the arms of another, you could make the dangler a very tight fit but this is not an option to me as it would defeat the quick access to my SAK plus I could never trust that way of carry again anyway  :salute: my only dilemma now is finding a sheath that is horizontal carry as I hate vertical carry sheaths and there doesn't seem to be much out there for horizontal SAK sheaths  one option is a phone case but I had one before and they're way to big TBH.

Don't go throwing your danglers out guys it may have been a freak one off but one things for sure it's put me off for good,I just thought I'd share my story and something for you to keep in mind if your moving around a lot  ;)

I usually use a carabiner attached to a belt loop and the SAK.  Works like a charm.  But I have a thing for carabiners and I don't like sheaths generally.

That's one of the things that puts me off danglers and pocket clip-type attachments in general (my other major objection being the way a pocket clip cries "knife"). I don't do sheaths anymore either as they have this nasty habbit of getting in the way on the most awkward of moments. The method that works best for me is an Urban Wallet-type of carry (I used to use the coin pocket as well, till I almost lost a sak when it jumped out of it as I was running down a hill). That said, have you tried clipping the dangler on your coin pocket so that the clip is on the inside? Perhaps that will stop it from catching on things. :-\

I'm going to have to experiment with that method.  I do prefer pocket clipping a knife but they do bend
quite badly from time to time when caught on something like a counter edge.
I don't like sheath carry much because it's always getting caught on jackets, pullovers, dropping off
belt when unbuckled.
I have the Vic Soldier though that would would work with some sort of a carabiner system but just have
to figure out how to attach it to the knife.  :)

My "dangler" is made from thin paracord, woven in to cobra stitch and clipped to my belt, other end hangs in pocket with the tool of choice for the day :)

Hey John, if you like that carry style you should definitely have a look at the Vic belt hanger (33548). :tu:

My favorite jacket in the world is a fleece with a drawstring waist. That drawstring has an unhealthy appetite for the pocket clips of tactical folders. I have to be very careful.

I even have issues with many clip-on belt sheaths. I'll try to pull my fleece down over the sheath. But if the fleece pulls up a few inches, the drawstring will catch on the bottom of the sheath, and lift the sheath right off of the belt.

The problem is not so bad, now that I mostly just carry a SAK attached to a lanyard. It's pretty close to impossible to lose my Farmer.

A small carabiner used in the same fashion as dangler will lock onto your pocket rim and hold on even if the content is flipped inside out.

I'd like to state for the record I have not made any inappropriate comments about the word 'dangler'.  It has taken all my self control...

I don't use a dangler for that reason - seems too easy to pull something out of the pocket on onto the floor.  I keep my SAK in a pocket and use a short lanyard to assist in getting it when I need it.  Unfortunately pocket carry is difficult to make 100% safe unless you tie the item to yourself which isn't always practical.  Even then you could scare the idiot flock of sheeple if the offending item falls from the pocket and dangles at the wrong moment - in the UK that can be enough to get you in trouble with the old bill.

I find a money/watch pocket in a pair of jeans is snug enough with a decent sized tool to hold it without impeding removal when needed.  There is always a risk of dropout but its minimised.

Glad to hear you found you tool again John :tu:
