I dont mean to be a Poo head , but all my computer anghst went away when I went Mac . No trauma , no drama , just does what it says on the tin ! Suck it hard Microsoft ! A Lawyer , and a dentist of my aquaintance have both switched to Imacs , and would never consider a windows based lifeform again .

Chris

I have used both Mac and Windows machines over multiple generations of each, and I can honestly say that they both can have issues.

Many of the Apples I used had freeze problems. You had to save your work much more often than you should, or risk losing it all when the Mac went stiff.

And while I have never had a serious infection or anything on a Windows machine, I will admit that they require more diligence in keeping them clean and safe. And they do tend to crash as they get older and loaded down.

But the one thing I have seen again and again is simple user error and poor judgment with regard to surfing, downloads, and software. Most of the folks I know who have computer issues on a continuous basis would have these issues on any machine regardless of OS. Why? Because they don't really know how to maintain the thing properly. They run no antivirus software. Or they have one, but they never update it (or set it to update itself). They don't scan for malware... ever. They download stuff they should not download. They never clean up the hard drive. Etc.

I would happily use either a Mac or a PC.. no preference here. Mostly I am Windows these days due to cost. Macs are just too pricey for me right now.

The main thing to keep in mind about the whole Mac vs. PC debate is this: There are many more users of PCs than there are Macs. That means there are more reviews to be read. And more reviews means a greater instance of bad reviews.

And between you and me... I find that Mac users think the OS is gonna solve all of their issues related to a lack of knowledge, and this is how they justify the cost. But then when there is a an issue with their Mac, they keep quiet about it. You wouldn't buy a Lamborghini and then bitch to your friends about how uncomfortable it is... no... you would smile and say, "Oh, I adore it!"

Can I just point out that this laptop is over 3 years old and this is the first time I have ever had a problem like this.  It has served me really well.
I'm back!!

Oky doky, you may well be able to fix it without reinstalling, as that can be a ball ache if you're not too used to it (drivers, programs, settings, data transfer etc)

It really does sound like you've picked up a virus, probably a rootkit as a lot of them games do have them binded on to them. Its very common at the moment, getting it loads at work :(  It may or may not be a virus, but either way, its probably fixable without a reinstall.

When you are next on it, you need to keep tapping F8 as soon as you press the power button. Then you need to select "Disable Autmatic Restart on System Failure". The PC shouldn't cyclic boot then and stay on a Blue Screen. Get the 0x000000?? code and let me know as that would help loads, as it will be a good indication of whats stopping it booting and I can then help you from then.

Yep, keep tapping it until you get to the screen where you can select different options.
Is it a Packard Bell, as they use F8 for the Boot Menu as well?

Then go onto the Disable autmatic restart, press enter, wait for the blue screen and try and find that code

Ok here's what it says;

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

and the code is;

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x84F4A9D0, 0xC000009C,0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Excellent, thats whats needed :D

A lot of the times a Chkdsk will sort out that problem.

Do you know if you have:

Recovery Console installed as a boot option,
or do you have a Windows disc, not a manufactures recovery disc?

On that F8 menu I can use;

Safe mode  X
safe mode with networking  X
safe mode with command prompt  X
enable boot logging
enable VGA mode
Last known good config
directory services restore mode
debugging mode
the system failure restart which I changed
start windows normally  X
reboot
return to OS choices menu

I have done those marked with an x before, but anything else I should try?
I'm back!!

No, don't try any of the others.

OK, as you don't have a Windows disc, I'll PM you a link in a couple of minutes to a file which you need to download, then burn to disc. Its not the Windows disc but a bootable recovery disc which we'll need to boot from and then do the repairs from within.
