Your Top 3 games EVER...
on: December 13, 2009, 07:04:18 PM
Ok, I just played one of my alltime favorite games again and asked myself: Is it just me or are older games funnier to play? I like modern games too, but I think the older games had better stories, nicer jokes and better gameplay. Anyways, what are your Top 3 Games of all genres?

ACTION/SHOOTERS

1: No One Lives Forever
2: Duke Nukem 3D
3: No One Lives Forever 2 (Ok, Tomb Raider 2 is very close, but NOLF funnier)

STRATEGY

1: Civilization II (best part, the latest one is way too complicated)
2: Stronghold
3: Command and Conquer

SIMS

1: Sim City 2000
2: Transport Tycoon
3: Tropico (funny as hell!)
3: Hollywood Pictures (I love both, hard to decide)

ADVENTURES

1: Monkey Island
2: Day of the Tentacle
3: Indiana Jones an the Fate of Atlantis

SPORTS GAMES

1: WWF WRESTLEMANIA
2: GRAND PRIX 2
3: INDYCAR RACING

JUMP AND RUN

1: Sonic the Hedgehog
2: Super Mario Bros
3: Earthworm Jim

PUZZLES

1. TETRIS
2: DR. MARIO
3: PIPE

So guys: What are your favorites?

there's quite a few in my list... depends which era we're talking about...

FPS:
I enjoyed many hours of the original Quake, and Quake2, but Quake3 Arena (and now Quake Live) don't do anything for me. Same goes for Unreal Tournament, I was a huge fan of the original, but as they move on they seem to be getting worse rather than better. Duke3d was great at the time, I was really looking forward to DNF... but we all know where that ended up... Far Cry series... top notch on PC, including Crysis... S.T.A.L.K.E.R. many hours wasted, mods made it even more addictive... spent quite a bit of time in Return to Castle Wolfenstien:Enemy Territory and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Driving:
I loved the early Need For Speed games... they were top notch... up to the last few I'd say... I tried NFS Nitro on my Wii and am not exactly feeling the fun factor... Trackmania Nations (ESWC) was a fun free game... I got Test Drive Unlimited for PC... loved it... I blew way too many hours driving/racing in that game (and I have a wheel setup too!)

Strategy/RTS:
Starcraft/Warcraft1&2 were fantastic, most of the Command and Conquer/Red Alert series as well, haven't touched the newer ones like Generals. Total Annihilation was amazing when it first came out... I love the expandability by having downloadable addon units... left the game wide open! Doubt I'd play any of them for long nowadays. Then the entire WH40k:Dawn of war series ate part of my life... War Front Turning Point was very entertaining, and had me hooked for ages (in single player)

Warsim/tactical FPS:
Battlefield 1942. the following ones bored me to death. Ghost Recon... many many hours wasted on that (in multiplayer coop!) The newer Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (GRAW) was amazing, but none of my friends got into it, so I never got to try multi-coop... I really liked Joint Ops Typhoon Rising between GR and GRAW... fps, mid mission changeable weapons, drivable vehicles... The Rainbow Six series was nice too, I enjoyed the Vegas ones most.

Dungeon:
Diablo, Diablo2 great stuff... some time spent in Dungeon Siege series... Hellgate London: right idea, shame it died a horrible death... Currently addicted to Torchlight

MMORPG:
World of Warcraft. not tried others. while waiting for the new starcraft/diablo this filled my get better loot and level up craving for a while.

I'm sure there's a pile of games that I played for a while that at the time, entertained me, and should be mentioned too... but alas I'd never finish this post...

My list of games to play this week include

Okami, Wii

Most played is Starcraft

Waiting for Starcraft 2

I would mention World of Warcraft but I consider that more of an addiction, I threw out my discs to prevent me form reinstalling it after I clocked over 30 days online, that's 720 hours logged on that I consider I could have been doing something better than grinding.  Partially after the burning crusade quests upgraded all my hard earned items in a little under two play sessions which made it seem all the more worthless.

I have 10+30+10+60+60+30+30 days on my account, no idea how many logged in hours, been clean since mid July. I have BC and WOTLK, shortly before my last payment ran out they dropped the mount requirements and pricing... I'm tempted to hop back in for the holidays...

forgot to mention, now that everything runs through battle.net (in preparation for Starcraft2 I think), once you reg the serial numbers of your game CDs, you can download the full clients for any Blizzard games...

This is tough.

The top 3 titles for me are:

1. Dune II, The Building of a Dynasty.(I had Amiga's back then, and this was the first RTS game that I ever saw. I was enthralled with this game to no end. Major disappointment when I switched to PCs later as that version sucked compared to the Amiga version in graphics, and well....everything.)
2. Diablo. (Another type of game that seemed like a first of its genre. at the time, I was one of the first to join Bnet and play the game as I recall. Even belonged to a group called The Usual Suspects who hung out in the help channel and gave free tech support. Once Blizzard went WOW, I quickly moved on as I wasn't and still am not a fan of the pay as you gaming scheme).
3. Total Annihilation. (Probably one of the best all time RTS games ever. Ground breaking in its scope and fan based unit production. There was just something pleasing about turtleing behind fortifications so well built and constructed, that the AI or another player couldn't approach without getting total annihilated. The newer games just don't seem to have the magic of the original title).
A little Leatherman information.

Me neither.  I did like God of War when Kim had a PS2, but she upgraded to an Xbox 360 and now I don't really play anything.  When I first saw the title of this thread I immediately thought about board and card games...mine being Set Back, Pictionary, and Clue.

Nothing beats a good game of chess eh? ;)

I remember playing all kinds of primitive games 25 years ago and thinking they were all magic. I had a handheld Donkey Kong player which I loved to bits too!

Then came the modern age PC and all the excellent graphics that came along with it. I think for me, my 3 faves from that time were:
Doom, Quake and Theme Hospital.

Nowadays I mostly play PSP and my favourites so far on that are:
Daxter, Lego Star Wars and God of War.

Currently playing Pangya Fantasy Golf, badly :D
