Reflecting upon rings.

After reading about another thread regarding EDC Jewellery in the EDC section, I have been thinking about Jewellery lately, which in my mind, is closely related to my parents. My parents loved jewellery. My father had a rough upbringing, and didn't have much when growing up. He always felt that jewellery was a sign that you were doing well in the world. In that regard, he would buy me some rings etc when I was in High School. I however just could never get used to wearing any of it. Consequently, I only wear a watch today. I think I slightly disappointed him in that regard.

Anyways, that other thread got me thinking about jewellery.

Well, I opened the safe up after a year and a half hiatus to take this photograph of mostly the male centric rings. These are mostly sized 13 to 15.

Included are my Grandfathers rings. The First row first right belonged to my mother's father (He was a small man in size), and the bottom row, 3rd from the right belonged to my father's father (As you can see, he was a big guy himself). Some of these are mine, like my High School graduation ring, and a few others. The most sentimental of them is my father's wedding band on the bottom row first right.

Yep, guess I am being a bit sentimental at this time of the year. Anyways, thought some of you might appreciate seeing them. Well you know how it goes. Once I got these out to look at them again, I just had to take a photograph...

I have a few rings myself, but I don't much care for wearing them either.  I haven't even worn my wedding band in so long, it doesn't even fit anymore.

I have an Air Force signet ring that means the world to me- it belonged to my father's best friend (and my godfather) who died of cancer some years ago.  My father gave it to me I think partly because he wanted me to have a keepsake,and partly because I don't think he could bear to look at it, reminding him of what happened.

I also have a high school grad ring, which is odd considering I'm actually a high school drop out.

Another ring I have is a Harley Davidson ring that is probably worth a small fortune these days as it was (at the time anyway) the only HD ring ever commissioned by the Hudson Bay Company, which is known to Canadians today simply as "The Bay."  I think I got that about 15 years ago?

If I was to wear a ring in the future, it would probably be something like this:



The Ring Thing is a bottle opener that you wear on your finger.  Does it count as a multitool?

Nice rings.

But rings are not my thing and I really do not like jewellery on men. The only jewellery I use is my dog-tag and I will use a wedding ring when that times come.

But if I had like a Superbowle ring or something like that I think I would use it.

Rings and watches on a farm are good ways to lose fingers and hands (found that out working on a tractor transmission when my wedding band got caught inside).

I like rings, but I don't wear them.  I like watches too, but use my Cybertimer now.

I only wear my wedding band although I have worn other rings in the past.  As Mr Whippy says though rings, watches and other jewellery don't really mix with machinery so I've always been careful about taking stuff off before doing any work like that.

I agree. My father only wore his wedding band to work, which explains its slight out of shape appearance. The rest, he would wear for special occasions etc.

I know what some of them are worth as I was there when he bought them. 

He would never have worn them to work.

I do have a very bad photo of some of my mother’s rings taken at the same time I took the above one. Bad in that I only took a single quick photo. I took it too quick I guess. I will share it even though it doesn't meet my standards.



He liked buying her jewellery. In case you are wondering, the first 4 on the right of the bottom row are Opals. Some of these rings aren't expensive, but held importance to my mother. I know a few where bought when my father was starting out as an apprentice and hence didn't have much money. Some of these, my mother had before she met him. Once again, very high on my sentimental value for me. in fact, it far outweighs any monetary value...and once again, I know what some of these cost when bought new years ago as I was there with my father when he bought them.

Thank God I don't have that buying Jewellery bug. SAKs and MTs is enough for me.

It's a wonderful collection and tribute to your parents.  Can't ever really put a price on something that means that much to people you love.  My parents aren't really sentimental that way, but I do know that my mom treasures certain things from Dad and vice versa.  My most treasured piece of jewelry cost about $20 but it hasn't left my finger but a handful of times in over 10 years.
