New Leatherman Sheath
on: January 23, 2010, 08:51:41 AM
First of, we don't know much about it, except that this sheath is supposed to replace many of the regular line sheaths on full sized tools.  I can't say for sure which ones, but I did head Waves and Charges.  I'm not certain if this will be the new sheath for Fuses, Kicks or Blasts.

I also don't know if this is the final design, or a prototype, so it could be significantly different by the time it gets into everyone's grubby little hands!

As you can see, it's a solid looking sheath with reinforcements all over the place.  This does seem to make it a bit on the bulky side, as there are loops or pockets on either side of the sheath that don't seem like they would fit a bit kit or much of anything else.

Either way, it is still a nice looking sheath and is designed to allow the tool to be carried in the open or closed position, and really reminds me of a full sized version of the leather Juice sheath.

Also, no word yet on when these sheaths will start showing up.

I like it! It looks to be the best of both worlds (Leather/Nylon).  :tu:

It still doesn't look as good as a full leather sheath.

But still it looks better and far more wellmade than the Fleather sheaths, so both thumbs up to Leatherman..  :2tu:

I suppose more choice is a good thing, so now you can go for all nylon, nylon leather combo, and all leather, and I suppose there are also molle sheaths as well.

But IMO the all leather is still the best.

Those side pockets seems to be bound to have whatever is in in to fall out. Or at least look like that.

Am I the only one not having a problem with the original sheat that came with the wave? I have it now for I don't know, 5 or more years and stil doing alright. And I do carry it almost every day.

My 2006 Wave's sheath dropped off my belt 2 years ago. The stitching around the belt loop tore out.

I actually prefer the old nylon sheath.  I've had one wear out after a year of multiple open and closures a day, but I still think it works best for me.

If Leatherman is going in this direction, I'm going to have to stock up on some old sheaths before they are gone, because I don't like this new one.

I picked up a few things to give away, but pickings were slim this year as all the manufacturers had to divide their efforts between here and the Outdoor Retailers show in Salt Lake City, which was scheduled at the same time.  Usually they are a few days apart, but not this year.

I'll post some of my thoughts on the show this year in another thread, so we don't derail this one!  :D

The new sheath looks to be designed specifically for the person who likes to carry their tool in the "open" condition. Personally, I never much cared for "open" carry, but thinking back, this was mainly because previous sheaths from Leatherman really didn't seem to do a good job of securing the tool in this position. :-\ The recent Charge/Wave leather sheath for instance (pictured below on left) seemed like it would only barely snap shut on an open tool. :P

This new one works much better. I may just have to give open carry a second chance. :)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

That sheath looks quite a bit more durable than the current line and it's nice to see them moving in that direction.  However, I would have greatly preferd a nice true leather sheath.  Even though they're made of "pleather," I'd take my leather Blast or Surge sheath over that thing any day.  I just like the classic look of a leather sheath, and the current ones aren't really that bad once they get broken in.  I know I'm in the minority here, and it's great to see new inovation coming from Leatherman.
