Leatherman to discontinue Serac flashlights
on: December 29, 2009, 01:27:40 AM
In response to my email inquiry to Leatherman, Beth Sullivan of customer service wrote today that Leatherman is "discontinuing the Serac line of flashlights" and that is the reason they have removed the Seracs from their web site.

Maybe I can find an S3 on sale soon.

Is there a special reason for it?

Haven't handled one but looking at the specs it seems to me they just had not much extra to offer in that crowded field indeed.

Best get that S2 sooner rather than later then!

They're made from Fenix parts right?

Could it just be that the Monarch range is just selling better getting better profit margins?  LM aren't exactly known for being sentimental about their own products.

It could be. I think I'm right in saying that the lights of the same quality as the Seracs could be had cheaper, so maybe they just weren't selling.

I know I know nothing worth knowing about lights, but I adore my S3, but I would never have paid full UKRP for it - that's for sure.

I have an S2 but have seen Seracs sold at only one "brick and mortar" store here -- a firearms store/shooting range which sells knives.   Even the large outdoor sports stores near me (e.g., Cabelas, Bass Pro Shop, Gander Mountain) don't carry them.

Therefore, I suspect the Seracs are so expensive compared to most "consumer" flashlights that retailers would not buy them.  This is conjecture on my part.

Sounds plausible though Parnass.

Maybe they pitched to a market that doesn't really exist?

I was hoping they had removed them from their website because they had an update in progress.......oh well. The S2 is a great AAA light anyway. I think I'll have to get one quick for a backup.

I think part of the problem is the cost and also the fact that for the average person shopping in a B&M store, some form of a LED Maglite is more than sufficient.

The latest version of the 2D Maglite with the Rebel emitter is an amazing light for the money, especially when you get them 50% off.

That's right...In fact; they are Fenix lights.

Just stripped down a bit for price/simplicity's sake...

For a similar price one could get a Fenix with all of the features of the Serac and then some, plus probably more output.

They won't have the Leatherman logo/name, so for collecting purposes they won't quite cut it....

But in the flashlight world; the Fenix lights(among others) are the quality equivalent of Leatherman.
