Anyone seen that movie Avatar?
on: December 18, 2009, 10:12:33 AM
I've seen some previews on the tv and the genre is something I like I'm not so sure about this. Seems like it depends a bit to much on the special effect, in a bit of a Twister/Juressic par kind a way.

I think I'm going to see it anyway  ::)

Yeah, I'm up for it too.... just a sucker for most things in the genre I guess! Cameron's not exactly rubbish at his job either, so it stands a good chance despite his hiatus I reckon. Initial reviews seem to think the effects are excellent and it has the lovely Sigourney in it too which is a little bonus.

There's so little that comes out that I'm actually excited about but I love going to the cinema :)

:) Just watched the movie today in 3D, had to pay a couple of bucks more for those glasses but the experience was amazing, it was my first 3D movie and loved it. Cameron really made a good movie and I really recommend to go and watch it in 3D, it might become one of those movies that you really enjoy watching only in movie theaters.

I heard about that 3d thing as well. The last time I saw a 3D movie was I shark documentry 20 years ago. I was very impressed at the time.

But a lot of things are impressive when you're 13 years old.

Anyhow, I'm still going to see it I guess. If I can find somebody to go with. Before I could ask my girlfriend already said NO when watching the preview on tv  ::) :D

Just got back from seeing it... :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

You gotta go see it in 3d.  Renting it from redbox just won't cut it.

One of the better movies i've seen in a while. The lighting and the effects are great hence they don't wash out the storyline. Not like Independence Day and 2012 where it's all effects and no plot.

The wife & I have tickets for this evening in 3D (dubbed in Spanish...)

I've watched the internet VCR edition beforehand, can't wait to see it on a big screen in hi-res & 3D...

We're just back from seeing it in 3D. While the 3D certainly added a lot of depth in some parts of the movie, I think I might have enjoyed the non3D version just as much. Was nice on a big screen tho!

I managed to catch the 3D version last week too and I thought it was excellent  :tu:

The sillyness of "unobtanium" aside, it's a really entertaining movie and well worth going to see on the big screen. The 3D is far more sophisticated than the old red and green specs version, and really jumps out at you.

Maybe it was because we sat at the very back of the theater because we got there so late, or the fact that 3D glasses (same as lab safety glasses) never fit me due to my glasses (doesn't mean I didn't keep the 3D glasses >.>), but very little of the 3D seemed to jump out at me.  Oh, and whatever movie that had piranha and a chainsaw was dumb, especially at the angle I viewed it at. ._.  Still $10.25 wasn't bad compared to some of the prices I've seen for the 3D movie. @_@;

We had some fancy Dolby 3D glasses which we had to give back. They fit rather fine over top of both mine and the wifes normal glasses.

We prebooked our seats via internet, sat more or less in the center of the audience. They set us back 9eur plus 0.75eur booking fee each. It's a nice reservation system they have as you prebook the seats via internet and it's tied to the bank card you reserve with, you run your card through the machine at the theater and out pops the tickets (the queues were huge for the ticket vendor, but not the prebooking machines)

Anyways, some parts of the 3D were a bit off to me... the item in front was clear and everything behind was blurry/out of focus. The wife had the same feeling. At the very beginning we both felt a bit nauseous for the coming out of hybernation sleep (it seemed like the corridor went on forever to me...) But I think they intentionally overload you with 3D to get you used to it.

I agree with nuphoria about the "unobtanium", but if you think about it a bit, the whole idea of the film has a lot of double meanings that can be applied to the world we currently live in. The environment is taking a beating and the people who should care don't, and the military powers are barging in where ever they feel like it to rape for resources... without caring for the natives... so to speak.

And then we have this insecurity:

So I went! And the Frog sums it up perfectly if you ask me. The story an characters very thin, in less than 5 minutes you know how it will end and the "message" is so obvious and not subtle at all, but nevertheless, impressive sounds and sights  :tu: If you are into special effects, it is a defenit must.
