on: July 01, 2007, 07:36:51 PM
Just trying to I.D this for someone .WAS MADE BY "SNAIL BRAND"( LOVELY IMAGE OF A SNAIL ALSO).

ON THE OTHER SIDE IT SAYS "SOLID CAST STEEL AND ENGLISH MAKE".

Wondered if anyone knows any info about it and being cast steel would it have been heat treated and would it hold an edge .

It's an old crate opener.  I'm not sure of its age.  It's missing the wooden handles (see photo*).

Snail Brand still manufactures tools: http://www.smithfrancistools.co.uk/Default.asp?Page=35

It's a Box Tool.  I have this one from Lee Valley Tools:

Everything you need to build, pack, unpack and break down crates.

Unless of course, the guy that made the crate used screws, then all you'd need is a drill ;D

I have been looking at those lately... but they seem a little pricey.  I'd hate to spend $40+ on something I am going to pound into a wall.  I can get a good sledge hammer and prybar for less than that.

Menards had them on sale a few weeks (or was it months??) ago.  Some places on the net have it for as low as $26.99.  I might have to pick one up someday.  ...Do you think it's legal for street carry?    ;D

I always pick one up and handle that thing at Home Depot...but I'd never spend $40 on it...actually, I don't think anyone will, there's always the same 6 on the rack.

You should "accidentally" scratch each one the next time you are in to make sure they are the same ones and that they haven't been selling and replacing them very quickly!

Neat idea, but if they want to sell them at those prices they should consider making them out of a more tactical material like titanium with kraton handles and carbon fiber reinforced shafts!   ;D
