Essential iphone Apps
on: February 11, 2010, 06:34:54 PM
Got my iphone about 2 1/2 months ago and found acquiring apps almost as addicting as Multi/SAK/Flashlight collecting. Many hours of searching various sites to get the best of the best. Always looking for more(especially freebies,) so feel free to list your faves.

I'll start off with a bunch from the 90+ I have, leaving out some of the ones I haven't used yet, most are free:

Music: Pandora, Slacker, Last FM, Wolfgangs Concert Vault(large volume of live shows), AOL Radio(make sure to turn on high quality in the settings menu), Shazam, Tune wiki.

Productivity: Awesome note lite, 2do lite(waitng for some price drops for full versions of these 2), Pandorabox(lets you know when apps have price drops)

Weather: Accuweather, Weatherbug, the weather channel - all have different functions I find necessary.

Utilities: Appbox pro(has about 20 functions, very handy), ATT my wireless(essential for checking minutes/text usage), dragon search, stickit(freebie that allows you to use emoticons in all other apps), Scanner 911(police/fire/ems scanners from all over the country,) Guitar tuner, Live Cams.

Navigation: Inrix traffic(free and very accurate real-time traffic,) Trapster, Where.

Sports: Espn scorecenter, Sportacular

Reference: Dictionary.com, Bing, Whitepages mobile, wikipanion, mall maps mobile.

News: NY times, Usatoday, AP mobile, engadget

Entertainment: The Word/Colbert report, IMDB, Ibikini, TV Guide mobile, rotten tomatoes, pocket god.

Lifestyle: Amazon, Around me, big oven, YP mobile

Games: Not all free, but great time wasters: Bookworm, Peggle, Flight Control, Doodle jump, Rolando, minigore, sol free solitaire, sudoku free.

Books: Stanza(free books from huge library), comixology, iverse comics.

Travel: Google Earth, Yelp, Urbanspoon

Thats enough for now, I left a bunch out I haven't used yet. Also just got the  swimsuit edition of SI in the mail, and there is a corresponding free app for it SI swimsuit 2010.

No Iphone here. If a smaller model comes out, I'm maybe up for it. But for now, it is just to damn large for me. I always thougt in the future electronics will be smaller but for now it seems everything, phones specially, is getting bigger and bigger and my pockets are not getting bigger. I feel I'm back in the 80's again, phone sizewise.

Just wondering how you got those pics, did you scan your screens?

How is N.O.V.A? Was waiting for price drop on this

To take a pic of your screen at any time hit the home and sleep button at the same time. It saves your screen shot in your photos. NOVA is a great game. Mulitplayer on it is particularly fun to play.

I really want an iPhone but will have to put it hold until finds settle down a bit here.

It's sad I know, but one of the apps I'm most excited about getting is the birdsong one :)

Not sad at all. Some of the most interesting apps are the simple ones. I like the USGSseismic one to see earthquakes around the world. The Flip it one is cool for making those animated flip books like when I was a kid.

I also have 6 movies, tons of music and on the WATTpad app something like 20 books.

Wish I would have known, would have saved me some time with that write-up because there seems to be a problem typing messages and not being able to see them as you type, maybe it will get cleared up when the servers get switched.

I wouldn't call it useless mate  :P My Nano is a 16 GB one where as the touch i got given is only 8GB. What i do is though when travelling long distance, is take all the music off the touch and use it for films etc plus it is used mainly as my PDA when on business. ;)

I don't know that I'm in love with my Iphone, but I sure like it a lot. :D  My "essential" apps are: Google, Todo, Kindle (all kinds of free books you can download), Secure Info, IFitness, Mahjong, Handy Level, Bones, Anatomy, 2010 World Cup (it has a countdown of days until the tournament...excited about that!!), and Skeeball.  I'm still trying to find the perfect organizer app...ToDo is alright but not exactly what I was looking for.  Oh, how could I forget!  The Victorinox app...not "essential" but cool.  :)
