Multi Media Contest?
on: June 27, 2007, 01:20:40 PM
Has everyone seen this thread HERE about the latest multitool advertisements? It gives us an idea for a cool contest, but we are wondering how many folks would be interested in participating.

Basically the contest would be a competition to see who can create the best new multitool ad. We would let the contest run for a few weeks, give everyone interested plenty of time to submit as many entries as they'd like. Winner chosen by vote afterwards as usual.

The contest would be open to photos, ad copy, video...whatever you want to do. Humorous, serious, it doesn't matter. Put yourself in the mindset of an ad agency executive, then try to imagine what it would take to best sell your client's product. Your entry could just be a bit of photo fudging (or taking a cool pic and typing a slogan over it), or even just a small write up or ad copy.  Heck, a decent enough Classified Ad might work. You get the idea.

Anyhow, the grand prize we have in mind is definitely an item worth making the effort for, and we've already got a good second place prize in mind too. The real question comes down to a matter of participation. Are enough folks interested in getting in on a contest like this to give it a go?

You're fairly new here so it's understandable that you have to ask... in this case the prize is something almost everyone here would give their eye teeth for, and will never get anywhere else, so we want to make certain this contest will fly rather than fizzle before we offer it.

Nothing worse than wasting a good prize on a contest that only two people enter....

Yeah, I love those ones too... of course this contest is more about making our own ads rather than copying existing ones!

Here's a sample I whipped up in less than half an hour. Found a Bear picture somewhere on the net, took a photo of my Super Bear Jaws tool and laid it over the top, then went to the Bear & Sons site and copy-and-pasted their logo. No problem, give it a try!

I like the sample but for the multitool.org ad, it may be a good idea to only use original images or "royalty free" images.  With "royalty free" images, look closely at terms.  Some require a special license for commercial use or print.  Sorry if I'm being a party pooper but its better to think about this in advance rather than after you've spent hours working on it.

So you think I'll get in trouble for using the picture of the grizzly bear? In a sample ad for a hypothetical contest?

Not you!  Not now!  Silly!  I mean actual entries for the contest when/if it takes place.

edit: I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that the winning ad will actually be used as an advertisement.

I was just browsing thru this topic, and I seriously thought your ad was a real one.  That's really good  :)

I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that the winning ad will actually be used as an advertisement.

The idea for the contest was for ads for multitools not Multitool.org.  Advertise a Paladin, SOG, Gerber, Leatherman etc, not the site.  And, since it likely won't go beyond the forum, I seriously doubt anyone will really care much.  If the companies were going to sue us it would be more for pointing out some of the flaws in their tools rather than using pictures in a contest.

This might be a little late, but I think we were wondering if there was any interest in such a contest... I don;t think we actually started it, did we?

I am totally down for this contest. I have been bubbling ideas all day!

I need to learn how to photoshop though; Microsoft Paint really cramps my style.
