New PL model
on: March 07, 2010, 02:48:39 AM
questions about new style Powerlock-

1. does the plier head just look stronger or is it actually stronger?
2. if there is a spacer put in place of a tool, does the piano lock lop around or is it supported by a plate?
3. Do piano locks actually stop tool clumping?
4. do piano locks fit better with the tool notches?(my older PL has vertical blade play)
5. Have you ever heard of someone snapping a piano lock?

thanks 4 helping

1. If you are talking about the cutting power, they are the same to me.. the compound leverage system works the same. If you are asking how tough they physically are, well, I've broke one of the tip of my old BO Powerlock, but the 2.0 models don't look like they are made from a tougher material.

2. Er, I don't really understand?

3. No. Though it helps...

4. I think yes?

5. No, at least not yet.

Since the pianos are independent springs, if there is no tool supporting it what happens? does it wiggle up and down or is there something that keeps it steady in one place?

1. Without doing a destruct test, its hard to say. :-\ The pivot area on the new head IS beefier, so it should theoretically be stronger. :)

2. Great question! :salute: Each piano finger is supported by an individual flat spring.

In the picture below, the third finger from the right is lined up with a spacer. (no blade) It is tipped up slightly with nothing to rest against, but entirely secure.

3. Yes they do. The old PowerLock blades would come out in one big glob. Not so on the new ones.

4. There is still blade play, but it is less than before. The tab on each piano finger is wider than the bent sheet metal on the old lock, so there is less slop in the blade notch.

5. No.

:salute: to you, J-sews.. but tool clumping on the new Powerlocks.. I would remember seeing a tool clump definitely when handling my staff sergeants!  Would it be due to his use of WD-40 as a lube for the joints..?

Could be Andre. On mine the "outer" blades often times come out by themselves, but when I try to get one of the short inner blades the whole clump comes out.

(But that's not a problem - I just fold the ones I don't want back in) :)

Heh. And you couldn't deny that some times tool clumping IS useful... for me, on the old Powerlock at least, it furnishes me with a way to get that freakishly sharp awl out safely. :D

Finally, I see someone who isn't bothered by tool clumping!!  I don't know what the big deal is, if you are able to stomach the SOG handle covers then you shouldn't mind the small extra step of closing the other tools.  The only tool I have ever had that was perfect as a non clumper was my Spirit, but you can't even readily mod those so it's a give and take.

Tool clumping aside, what's your opinion overall on the piano-locks?

I recently got a 2.0 with pianos.  The whole non-clumping sog thing is UNBELIEVABLE :ahhh  I really like how it has a more flush look than the other locks and it is fun to play with.  But sometimes when I try to close the scissors it gets stuck.  I think it is a big improvement.

Though, if I were to redo it I'd integrate a piece of metal covering over the part of the pianos where you press to release, making them unlock all at once.  This way it would be as easy to open as the previous ones, and eliminate tool clumping!

Yeah, that's just what the PL needs--another flappy metal covering.  ;) :D
