Cool link, with a question?
on: March 17, 2010, 03:10:19 PM
First up thanks to Micah for pointing it out to me

http://www.ecospeed.com/

Now I've been looking into clip on electric bicycle motor's for some time, and about the only thing they have in common is the scarily high price :o

Now I'd be quite keen on having a go at making my own, but with the emphasis on it being cheap to build and maintain :)

But being a generally clueless idiot, and being on a tight budget. I'd need pointing in the right direction, so what sort of components would I need to you think ???

TIA guys :tu:

I think I'd start with a lawnmower engine, and just work up some way to attach the chain to the center shaft on the motor.  I'd probably try and put it over the back wheel, on a frame attached to the bike's frame so I didn't fry my legs on the heat generated by one of those things.

Realistically though, I think you'd be better off with a Vespa or other small scooter.

lol

The ecospeed ones recover pedal power to charge the batteries, which kinda kills the whole fuel powered engine thing.

while the full setups are about $1500+ it is probably a great solution if you often have hills to climb...

It may come to that eventually, but it's something I'm hoping to avoid if at all possible :-\

The Lawnmower is a good idea though :tu:

Which I do a lot of the time :-\

It's like a marginally flatter Alps down our way >:(

If you go to google maps and enter Chatham Hill me7, you'll see how steep and long it is :-\

I face this hill 4 times a week :-\ And it's no bloody fun on a 25kg bike with 34kg boy on the back :-\

I still think that ecospeed thing is pretty sweet... I don't have a bike worthy of such a setup... isn't this the bike you got?
(modded with their setup of course)

It's also true I don't have the $1500-2000 that they cost... seems to me you'd be hard pressed to find a better eco solution, that works that way, an engine that both assists and recoups your pedal efforts without fossil fuels... However, I'm betting somewhere in the UK someone is doing something similar already. If not, maybe you should approach them as a UK rep :P

Maybe you could mount a sail to your handlebars?

You could weave it out of plastic shopping bags. That would be a much more Green Tree-hugging Neo-Hippie thing to do  :tu: :D
