Fenix MC10 Anglelight First Impressions & Pics
on: March 20, 2010, 07:32:53 PM
:mail: Arrived today, here's some pics and initial thoughts, will give a further evaluation/review after I've had the chance to use it at work next week.

Pros:

Smaller & weighs less than I expected, very compact
Can attach to headlamp band
Includes spare O ring, lanyard and diffuser
Pivots 90 degrees
Tailstands
Hangable with triangular mount
Sturdy Ti coated clip, allows hands free use on pocket
4 modes; Low, med, high & strobe
Decent balance of flood/throw beam
Nice beam pattern, not ringy, no artifacts
Decently bright at 125 Lumens

Cons

Threads were gritty, had to clean and apply superlube, first Fenix I've gotten that had this, but its not a big deal
Tailcap threads missing some annodizing, a few very small chips, also no biggie
90% plastic, but decent quality pvc is used, seems sturdy, but only head(ribbed horizontal portion that starts at serial number) is aluminium
Pivot allen key screw had some pvc glue protruding which came off easily with the farmers awl(but u can still see it in the pics)
Plastic diffuser slightly hard to put on, may break over time
Only 125 Lumens, could be brighter

..........................................................................

So far I'm really liking the light. push button on top feels like and is slightly smaller than the round buttons on PS3 contoller, but slightly harder to press. Button works easily, and I dont find it difficult to use as some CPF posters. Seems almost as bright as the LD10, but I think it loses distinction from high and med modes when I put in a slightly used Lithium. NIMH battery works great. I'll shut up now, heres the pics:

Still too much daylight here to get a good feel for it, but I compared it to Fenix EO1 and its maybe 1-2 lumens brighter on low, quite usable and probably give a long runtime as well.

I also had to clean a few more bits of glue out from around the body, but its not as bad as it sounds, just cosmetic. If you've ever used pvc glue, you're probably familiar with its tendancies to get alll over the place.

As long as it doesn't affect the function (which in this case it doesn't) then I can live with it :)

There's a typo in the description, there are actually 5 modes: Low, Med, High, Strobe & SOS

As I don't go camping, this is the main reason I got it. It's very versatile, I've been experimenting using the lanyard and tying it up to things.

   No.

A couple more observations:

UI works as follows: Click once to turn on, click again and hold for 1 sec to go to next mode. Double click while on to go to strobe, and while in strobe click and hold for SOS. Has L/M/H mode memory when you turn off.

As battery gets low, you lose the high mode, goes to medium to save battery.

Found another small booger of glue but this one is under lens, and slighly on reflector, but does not affect beam appearance. QC not as high as other fenix.

Less plastic than I originally thought, battery tube seems aluminum with plastic jacket.

Moves a bit if you put it in shirt pocket as a hands free light due to head weight...more suitable for pants pocket

So, how often do you think you'll use the stobe mode?

Probably never, unless its to annoy a coworker. It does seem kind of superfluous for this style of light.....you cant :twak: with it and disorient with strobe

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  I'd much rather have the double-click shortcut go straight to full output.

Have had this for about 6 months now. Just a follow-up note about this light is that it gets pretty hot when left on for about 10 minutes on high mode. I was just removing a huge splinter from my foot and found it hard to hold the light.. even my NIMH AA was very hot. I still like the light alot and use it all the time, its quite versatile, clips nicely to a backpack shoulder strap for a nice hands free light when I'm hiking near dusk. Just hope it doesnt damge itself or one of my eneloops or duraloops.

I got some Loops charging, gonna run a test tomorrow with a fresh battery and take some temperature readings, I have a UEI infrared gun and another Fieldpiece digital temperature meter with a thermocouple I use to measure refrigerant pipe temps, so Ill update it shortly with what I find.

Ran it for 15 minutes, hottest part was 120 F/50 C, negative side of battery got to 100 F/38 C. Could be a good hand warmer in the winter  ::)

Did I mention I'm bored out of my insomniac mind?  :ahhh

I definitely wouldn't worry about Eneloops at 50c.  If it were closer to 100c, I would be more concerned.

Sanyo even sells an Eneloop-powered hand warmer that reaches 43c on the outside surface.

Actually, I'm glad this came back up.  I've been using a MC10 for a while too.  It's not my favorite light but man is it handy on the nightstand.  It's shape is distinctive so I can identify it easily by touch.  The low level doesn't wake everybody up AND:

It stands up and is directional, so it's easy to use for "in the dark" repairs.

Really, the only thing I don't like about it is that it's kinda goofy looking. :-[
