Help & Ideas Needed Please
on: March 24, 2010, 03:51:01 PM
Hi all,

I've got a training course coming up. It's a Train the Trainer course i.e. help me become better at delivering training :D

So our pre-course homework is to deliver a 5 -10 minute session on how to do something. It can be anything but I will need to deliver the session to the group.

Examples would be:

  • How to tie a tie
  • How to make a cup of tea
  • How to tie a shoe lace
  • How to change a light bulb
  • How to change the fuse on a plug
etc.

No PowerPoint allowed. We are encouraged to use props and create handouts. If I were too choose the 'how to change the fuse on a plug' one I would bring a plug with 2 fuses and demonstrate for all :D

As much fun as how to start a fire and drink a yard of ale would be it wouldn't really be feasible  :ahhh Additionally I will be flying to the course so this also affects my props choice  :-\

All guidance and ideas welcome  :salute:

How to french press some coffee. Bring in a thermos of hot water, coarse ground coffee, sugar and creamer and of course the french press... and after the presentation you could have a nice cuppa while the rest goes about presenting. :D

Good suggestion Kelly  :tu: Although I should have added I have to fly to attend the course and a bicycle tire may be a squeeze in my luggage :D I've edited my post now.

I was thinking along those lines; changing the tyre on a car. Yes I would have to leave the tyre at home but I could take pictures of me changing it or a short video

I normally train people from other companies on best practices, procedures, compliance, etc. If I like the course, and I think I will, I could put myself forward as a stand in trainer for my company's training team  :tu:

Coffee is a good idea Andre but I wouldn't trust the airline with a glass french press :-\

Why not, how to give a 5-10 minute training course? I'm not kidding either. Most people do not do a very good job on instructing others how to do something. You could give examples of how to setup a logical outline, how to properly use props, graphs, written material. Presenters also need to understand that they have to be relaxed, credible and how to take charge and control their presentation. Since they are giving the presentation, they need to be well versed on their topic of choice. Tailoring the material to your target audience members needs, wants and current skill levels, etc.  Also included would be making sure the presenter works smoothly with the material and props they have with them. The merits of speaking clearly and in plain and concise language. Then how address the question and answer period effectively. Even how to deal with difficult audience members or how to smoothly cut off the one person who seems to have an endless supply of questions and wastes everyone's time.

Ooooh, paracord!!!!  You could teach them how to tie a cobra stitch bracelet.  or a key fob.  And if you brought enough with you, you could let them make it while you demonstrated.  That would be fun.

Nice one Kelly  :tu:  I can do a basic square weave paracord lanyard by following these instructions http://www.lighthound.com/Square-Weave-Paracord-Lanyard_ep_40-1.html

Any easy guides for a cobra stitch bracelet?

I'm pretty sure Stormdrane has a cobra stitch tutorial up on that do-it-yourself website that I can't remember the name of at the moment.  I don't know if he has one on his blog or not.  Oh, what is the name of that site...I know it's listed on his website but I can't for the life of me remember it now.  Grr...I'll have to look.  But the round or square sinnet to make a fob would be just as cool.

Choose something that you know how to do and can easily do without looking at it much. They'll be marking/picking you up on things like:
eye contact with the audience
engaging the audience
varying your teaching style (eg combine a handout with pictures and written instructions, a demonstration and let them try it themselves)

Choose something that everyone knows how to do and will make them laugh....like how to tie your shoelaces. Take a pocket full of laces and make the group pair up and then show them how to tie the lace around each others outstretched finger (obviously taking turns!).

If you do use something that simple, make it a little dafter - like "how to tie your shoelaces whilst blindfolded"

Keep it simple and be a little different. They'll remember it.

Hope that helps  :)
