Gerber(?) hammer sorta pliers tool
on: March 14, 2010, 08:37:40 PM
Methinks the Chinese knockoff artists are at it again. ::) After all, if it were a real Gerber, would it not say so on the pouch?

But it sure enough has GERBER U.S.A. written on the side. And it certainly is a kooky contraption, which falls into a category Gerber has delved into in the past. :P :D

The tool (there doesn't seem to be a proper name for it) :( is built suprisingly well. No play in the plier or blade pivots, good fit between all parts, nice finish on all surfaces. Good quality construction throughout :salute:

But the design itself...? What are those pliers intended for?

Despite large jaws, they don't open very far. Maximum jaw opening is shown below:

Must be the curved plier tips are made for reaching down into something? ???

Or maybe it has something to do with electrical work? There is a range of three different size crimpers along the top jaw. Each crimper has a ridge in the center, like Leatherman cap crimper jaws.

The bottom jaw is smooth, except for a ramped section that lines up with a square cut out in the top jaw. I've no idea what it is intended for. :-\

One thing is for certain, it has nice blades. :) They are plenty long and stout. File blade teeth and saw blade teeth are perfectly cut. They remind me of Leatherman Juice blades, only bigger.

But there are no screwdrivers. Instead, it has a square driver that fits a set of sockets (included)

Overall thickness is just right, much better than the too-fat tools that usually come from China.

But it can't be a real Gerber. (can it?) There are no other markings on the tool or any of the blades, and no packaging other than the nylon pouch. The shipment came directly from Hong Kong, in a plain cardboard box. It must be whoever made it is trying to fool people into thinking it is coming from a "name brand" company.

I wonder if there will be a "Leatherman U.S.A." model soon? :D

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Bob I saw one on Ebay recently & did wonder about its True heritage , I thought it was a phony Gerber.
If it was a true Gerber I would be interested, hell if the quality is good I am already interested  ::) :D :D :D :D

Well they remind me of 'lasting' pliers, as used by cobblers (shoemakers).

I'll see if I can find a link.

OK so these are lasting pliers, used in cobbling to pull the leather tight before tacking it in place.

I admit that I'm not convinced myself. :-\

I'm thinking it's a Gerber Fishing Tool.  Stun em with the hammer, then use the pliers to remove the hook.

The file is for sharpening hooks, and the sockets are for repairing gear.

Yeah, that's it.  Very clever marketing on Gerber's part to mislead people prior to release.

There are just 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary number systems, and those who don't

Interesting Bob- I knew you'd buy one!

So what's your take on this one?  An attempt at faking a non existent Gerber, or possibly an attempt to convince Gerber to buy and legitimize the design?  It does look very convincing, like it could actually be a Gerber product.

I think its just a tool that someone had the devious idea of slapping a Gerber logo on in order to scam people. :-\ What seems odd though is how well built it is. I mean, this thing is made better than some legitimate Gerbers I've handled! :P I'd say the real Gerber folks better watch out or the fake Gerbers are going to give them a good reputation! :D

That "ramp into square" doodad looks like it might work as a jack crimper for CAT-5 cable, or phone cords if it's slightly smaller.  The plastic jacks on such cables usually have a bunch of copper gates (as seen here) that are squashed into the fanned-out wire tips, usually with a specialized set of crimping pliers.  That would sort of go with the wire-stripping functionality.

The hammer side is to beat your router until it works.  This is known, in the "industry", as percussive maintenance!

As carried out with a 16oz "shock applicator".  ;)

I like it!

I'm tellin' ya. That Chinese hammer multi I bought was as nice as a Wave as far as build quality.

Maybe the Chinese are becoming a real contender? They sure do seem to have no qualms about thinking outside the MT box. I'd like it if LM would make a hammer based tool with some complimentary tools inside it so as to pair it with a ST300, or a Surge, etc. without tool repetition.
