Seriously, I find them irritating to the point I can't listen. I mean wtf are they actually supposed to be exactly?  

It's called a BAND  .  Wiki has a good definition for you under "musical ensemble" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_ensemble

See I like the Clash and I know a lot of people that like the Clash (and bloody rightly so  ), but I also know a lot of people that say they don't like the Clash.  I can honestly say that (apart from you Dave  ) I don't know of anyone that can say that they think the RHCP's are awful.  Some say that they aren't fans, but awful?  I actually find that pretty surprising as they aren't rip off merchants like soooooooooo many these days, they actually play instruments in their band (somewhat a rarity these days and their basist it rated by many to be one of the best) and I find their music fit's in that middle of the road bracket so it isn't too rocky/heavy for some and isn't too woolly for others.

I like them and own a couple of albums and would rate Californication as a superb album.  I would never claim to be their biggest fan, but awful they ain't IMO.

I've got to say I'm with Dave on this one and here's another band high up in my rock'n'roll hall of fame. i was fortunate enough to see them many times

They have had some cracking tunes in the past... newer stuff tends to annoy me more than enjoy...

I would say, the RHCP were an awesome band.  Back when Dave Matthews Band and REM were awesome.  They're a little played out now, but still come up with a great song or two...
