Which Gerber is this? .....and warranty question
on: April 24, 2010, 01:49:21 AM
Hey Gang. I have more Leatherman's than anything. However one of my first MT's was a Gerber that got lost in the shuffle over the years. My only real memories of this MT is that while it would pinch my hand when using the pliers sometimes, is that the thing was very robust and was able to take a beating. I remember breaking the can opener on it while using it in a semi-emergency situation. Well, I have been doing some serious shop cleaning. Low and behold, guess what I found? I found that old Gerber amongst some old car parts. To this day even looking at it, I am not into Gerber tools enough to even know exactly what model it is. I am sure some of you will know right off. (pics below) Anyway, the reason for this post is the broken can opener and Gerber's warranty. I searched online and have found conflicting information, so, I thought I would ask you all, knowing many of you have probably dealt with them. I have read that along with the tool of course, they want: name, address, phone, description of problem and proof of purchase. Other places I have read you do not need the proof of purchase. I simply didn't save the receipt for something from so long ago. Will they simply replace the part or whole tool? Or is the part something they can just send me? (I could easily install it if they did) Your advice and input will be appreciated. Thanks!

They'll replace it with a brand new locking mp600 in a sheath and they'll send your old one back to you marked with an X in another sheath. And you don't need a receipt or proof of purchase just the problem and your shipping address.

Thank you for the prompt reply, TxSxB. I think I will send it out early next week.

No problem, Gerber has pretty fast turn-around so you should be getting it back in less than 2 weeks  :salute:

Just a little update. Gerber sorted things out just as you said they would TxSxB. They did indeed send me a new locking MP600 in a sheath as well as my old unit marked with an "X" in a sheath as well. I was pleasantly surprised... I was under the impression that the new MP600 was sent to replace my old unit and that no repair would be done to my old unit and sent back as is. In thinking this, it actually sat for well over two weeks before I finally opened it up again. Low and behold, they installed a new can opener! So now the old unit is fully functional again. The "X" mark I kinda buffed out to make it look like a weathered part of the black oxide so it is not as noticeable. Anyway, compared to other warranties out there, that was a pretty stand up thing to do. Turnaround time was not quite as quick as Leatherman, but I am not complaining... it was a great outcome.....

Indeed I did. This is my first time ever dealing with Gerber, so I don't know if this was a fluke or standard procedure. I primarily have Leathermans. Another little note in regard to size. My old unit was 1/8" inch shorter and not nearly as wide or thick as my Surge. The new MP600, while not as thick, is even longer than my Surge by 3/8" of an inch and just about as wide.....

It seems to be par for the course with Gerber warranty work tbh - great customer service as standard :tu:

The old tool is actually one of my favourite Gerbers, the Multiplier and it was really the MP600's "daddy". I like it so much because of the non-locking blades, which make it legal to EDC here in the UK. I have a really old beaten up one that I love.

I used to come here a lot.

Hey Ryan. At the moment, none... they have been posted in the trade section, sadly next to no one seems to have interest in them.....
