g-10 handles
on: April 27, 2010, 03:35:40 AM
 Hello my brethren,
I wanted your opinion on a certain matter.
I am very fond of G-10 handles on my knives, I find them to pretty stong for a light weight material.
But as any of you who have owned several g-10 handled knives would know, they're not all very grippy.
What do you guys prefer as a handle material and has anyone here ever tried putting grooves on your g-10 hanles?
Thanks,
Nelson

I'm a big fan of Micarta, but all of my G10 knives have been very grippy...to the point of tearing up a couple pair of jeans.

I also like Micarta. Strong, better grip and feel and lots of colors and textures (paper, cloth, more).

G-10 is really good too, stronger and a nice range of colors but I don't care for it in larger blades. The vibrations travel well with it and your hand will feel it over time (with chopping and hard use).

My fav handle material for large blades is "Resprene C" a rubber like material that resists chemicals and temperature change. It is also warranted for life.

Is that the rubber handles that they use to put on the older swamp rat knives?

Yes! that they now put on Scrapyard blades ;)

I've heard of people grooving G10 and texturing. I personally have sanded it, works easy and well ;)

WhichDawg have you ever grooved any g10 on your knives or do you know where I can find a how-to video? I am seriously thinking of trying this on one of my folders.
Thanks

Micarta is my preferred material, but G-10 seems stronger to me.

G-10 is much grippier with a bead-blasted finish.  Scibeer modded my Safari Hunter this way, and the difference in grip from sanded G-10 is night and day.

I love G10! >:D

G10 is incredibly grippy if you make some sort of perforation or groove on the surface - my Multitasker tools have a pressed-in weave pattern on their G10 scales to give them a grippier surface

On my prototype G10 grips for 1911 pistols, we used deeper diagonal slots to give the grips extra bite

I've never "grooved" just sanded the edges for a better fit in my hand.

Good luck, I'm sure you can do it, maybe practice on a hard wood to get your pattern and technique down.
