PayPal and eBay?
on: April 30, 2010, 09:25:49 PM
Is it worth getting PayPal and registering to eBay to buy one tool? I probably wont ever use it again so... What do you guys think?

I'd go for it. I was leery of Paypal but now i'm glad i have it as alot of people on MTO accept PP for their tools when selling. It's handy for when someone is selling that tool you want and they only take PP.

I think you can attach it to a Visa Gift card if you don't wanna attach it to your credit card or bank account.

Having a paypal and ebay account can be pretty handy.  You never know when you might see a good deal on eBay.  Paypal can also be used outside of eBay so it's handy to have.  I've had my eBay and paypal account for over 8 years now and I've never had a problem with them.  I don't use eBay as much as I used to but Paypal is always handy.

They also sell Ebay gift cards...i just saw some at the grocery store.  If you don't think you'll ever use it again, it might be worth it to get one of those cards to use on ebay.

This is my paypal account. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My paypal account is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my Ebay. My paypal, without me, is useless. Without my paypal, I am useless. I must snipe my multitools on ebay quickly. I must snipe faster than other collectors who are trying to outbid me. I must snipe before he snipes me. I will...

- It's free
- You can use it all over the web
- When used correctly it's safe/insured
- eBay is my MT source for $22 Diesels, $35 Surges, $42 Waves, well you get the picture...

I never had Paypal until joining this place :D

It really is the lifeblood for buying and selling on forums like these. Shame there isn't more choice out there  :-\

It took almost a week to get my Paypal fully functioning so I would recommend getting it before you need it  :tu:

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it  ;)

I don't like PayPal. They are a worthless company IMHO. I wish more ppl would use gunpal and alert pay. They are knife and gun friendly. Unlike PP.

Like 'em or hate 'em, Paypal is the only real game in town.  While I haven't had issues with Paypal myself, I know enough people that have to know it's far from a perfect system.  Still, when a service gets to be a certain size, they have to institute protective measures, both for themselves and the users, which means that many of the other payment forms may be preferable now, if they got to the size of Paypal, they'd likely be the same way.  But, since no one really uses them (not compared to the numbers that use PP anyway) they can run things pretty well how they please.

As stated above by others, get a PP account- it doesn't cost anything to get it, and it very well may come in handy at some point.  All the business I do online is done via Paypal, and I was resistant to it for a long time too.  However, like any other service, it's good for what it's designed for.  As a fellow Canadian, I'd suggest hooking it up to a credit card (use a prepaid one if you like) and when you receive money, leave it in your PP account.  It may not help with rent, but it'll take about a week to transfer the funds to your bank account anyway, so if you need money now, it won't help much.

Good luck, and if there's any other help I can offer, just ask.

Thanks Boss

I might as well get it it seems, but I don't have a credit card (I would rack it up on gear) and I'm currently too lazy/hungover to get a prepaid. So bank account it is.

It might not be an option for everyone but I setup a secondary bank account to link to my Paypal account. I have had zero trouble with Paypal over the years but have heard/read enough to know that things can go sideways very fast and very badly with Paypal in certain circumstances and I didn't want them to have access to my main bank account that funds my mortgage and other living expenses.

If I were to do it over I would get one of the online bank accounts, fund it with 20 bucks, and just leave it there. If you need some money from your Paypal just transfer it to the online account and use the debit card to pull cash out.

You can also get a paypal debit card.  If I sell something on ebay its because I need the money to pay for something, so I can either pull it out through an ATM and deposit it in my checking account or pay directly with the card.
