Re: Spyderco Captain
It is an excellent EDC. The rounded secondary edge is actually very useful for opening packages. It allows cutting tape/flaps etc without risk of spearing the contents. Also, no risk of breaking off the tip. The "hawksbill" main blade is excellent at cutting rounded type things. Cord, rope, straps, basically anything that would require extra tip pressure on a regular blade.
After getting some recommendations here, I'm very pleased with the VG-10 steel. At first, it was rolling the factory edge at the slightest job. After sharpening it on the Sharpmaker a few times, the very sharp but delicate factory edge has been reprofiled to a standard more durable Sharpmaker edge.
One last point: For sharpening the main blade, only the Sharpmaker corners work. The Flats just don't contact the concave blade very well. No biggie though.
I believe it was designed with gutting and skinning in mind, since the secondary edge would work well to push through and separate a hide from a carcass without making buttonholes (Haven't tried that yet

).
Re: Razel
The folding Razel is a hard working utility type knife. Besides the liner lock, there's a back up that prevents accidentally releasing the liner lock. The blade is a CHUNK of steel. The main blade is a basic hard working blade. The end, secondary blade is a razor sharp flat blade with two sided grind. It is like an extremely sharp flat chisel. Awesome for scraping.
The folding Razel is MUCH bulkier in the pocket however. If you don't plan on using it a lot, it is sort of large for walk around EDC.
It also holds an edge very well and has done so right out of the box. The Razel is a worker's blade. No posers allowed

.
For me, I tend to reach for the Razel for rough farm work days. For lighter fare or if we're headed out somewhere that I think I'd want a dedicated folder, I bring the Spyderco. It carries better. (Not as good for cutting sandwiches however.)
