Ryan, the Canon S5 IS has a bit of difficulty focusing on the Phillips driver head on. The AF system on this camera is a bit weak. However, I think you will get a good idea with the following two photographs. I have it next to the typical Gerber Crucial’s slim Phillips driver for comparison.

We have a car salesman around NY that says Hyndais are superior to Mercedes but cost 1/3 the price. .... he drives a Mercedes  ???

That phillips looks nearly identical to the one they have been using for decades in the MP line. And it still has the same drawbacks.

First, it's short and stubby. Second, the driver offsets to the farthest amount possible, versus other MT's which generally strive to put the phillips as close to the centerline as possible. Thirdly, due to the slidelock design it isn't practical to use the phillips extended halfway, at a 90 degree angle, in order to squeeze into a smaller space.

I have somehow always managed to have a better tool at hand than to have ever needed to use a Gerber MT phillips driver.  

As for grittiness? One of my Clutch's is gritty. It seems like there's some grit inside the space where the spring is hidden. But I've had 4 full size Gerbers and all were very smooth with perfect lockup on the tips. I had to loosen one up with some buffing compound to get the jaws to open under gravity, but not because it was gritty or rough. It was just tight.
