Howdy there
on: May 21, 2010, 08:30:20 AM
I've been posting here for a few days, but I never stopped to introduce myself.  Maybe I should do that.

My first knife at 9 years old was a cheapo Boy Scout camping knife with a blade configuration like a Vic Soldier + lanyard loop.  I learned a lot with that knife, including what not to do.

I became fascinated with SAKs, as many others did, because of the TV show MacGyver.  When I was a teenager, I owned and loved a couple of Tinkers, a Pocket Pal, and one of the early 111 models with a sliding lock, most of which have become lost (or possibly "found" by little brothers while I was gone) over the years.

When I was a freshman at college, I saw my first leatherman in a mall cutlery store (do they still have those?)  My initial thought was "With one of these, MacGyver would have ruled the world!  I plopped down more than I could really afford for it.  I carried it all that year, and then for the next two years which I spent in Brazil.  It came in handy more times than I could count.

I left that leatherman in Brazil with a friend, and have gone through a couple of PST/PSTIIs since then.

My current SAK & MT "collection" is quite modest.  I've got a a Tinker and a 84mm version of the Tinker without any back spring tools, whatever that one's called, both of which which I picked up at a gun & knife show for a few bucks each.  Both of those get EDCed a lot.  I've got a large (110ish?) Wenger with a big jack blade, liner lock, and saw that I use as my camping knife.  I've got a PSTII which I EDC, and a LM Supertool and Supertool 200 which sometimes live in my vehicles, and sometimes get carried when I'm "on the job".

I'm interested in modding SAKs and MTs (which is what brought me here), and have several projects lined up for me to try.

At the risk of being run out of town on a rail, let me say that I find some of y'all's collections of "shelf queens" perplexing, almost... sacrilegious.  Sticking a knife on a shelf where it won't get used is like sticking the Mona Lisa in a vault where it won't get seen.

*ducks*
