Thanks Allan.  :D

Time for another series of photographs.

Before sewing on the harness, the edges need to be finished first. I use a simple technique of wetting the edge and running a nylon slicker tool. The one shown here, I installed a Dremel shaft to hurry the job if needed. I don't use any other finish, as I find the edges come out nicely with just water, the slicker, and a bit of hard work.

With the edges all cleaned up, it is time to do some preliminary sewing.

The best most durable stitch is a saddle stitch. Lucky for me, it is also one of the easiest to do. To start off with, you need two needles. Blunt leather needles are preferred, and some waxed thread.

Next, place a needle on each end of your thread.

Now to do the Saddle stitch, you are basically doing figure eights, passing one needle through one side, and the other needle through the same hole from the other side.

After stitching the top shoulder strap, time to get onto the lower part.

Now I have the harness completed and sewn to the body.

And a look from the back. I found a bunch of small paperclips that work perfectly in holding the sides together.

Now I am thinking of doing something with the top. Might do a bit of lacing to dress it up somewhat and make the top a little stiffer. I still need to sew the main body and that bottom piece. That will be a job for another day though. I am taking a well deserved break tonight from the project.

All I can say right now is that lacing sucks.

Well...did I ever mention how much I hate lacing. Lace has a mind of its own, it is a living thing. You have to fight it to not twist on you, knot up, and if you are using the real leather lacing material, break on you. I spent a few hours lacing the top. I am happy it is now over and it does look good, but what grief. Now I remember why I never got into the lacing aspect of leather crafting. Oh I forgot to mention that the special lacing needles are also a pain to use.

I first used a thonging chisel to make nice square slits along a groove made to even things out.

Next up, the pain of threading the lacing needle. Now these needles have two metal teeth that are supposed to bite into the lace once you sandwich it in between the two metal halves. Not at all pleasant to use. Anyways, enough of that. I wanted to keep things simple, so I did a very simple lace. The trick is to keep the good side always outwards.

Yay! I am done that part. Here is the dreaded lacing needle and the left over lace.

After that, I figured I may as well start sewing the side. A slow and tedious process. Much like lacing come to think about it. :D

Here is the side now sewn. All that is left is to do the bottom (not today, my fingers are very sore), and to place a leather finishing product to water proof it.

I could be wrong, but I'm getting the feeling that you're not a big fan of doing the lacing. :D

Whether you enjoy it or not, it's looking good. :)

That's very impressive work, only found this thread today and once again I'm astounded by the hidden talents you have.

You may come to wish you'd never posted this thread as I'm sure you have a lot of requests for commissions now you've shown off what you can do.

I don't have time for commissions. However, if anyone is interested in getting into leather crafting, I hope they find this thread somewhat educational and give them some ideas on how to do some things. That is the intent of this thread...not to advertise.  :salute:

The last update, as I am now officially done.

Well, sewing that bottom piece was somewhat difficult, It always is when you try to sew such different shapes together. I had some difficulty having the needles meet up with a few holes. Overall, it went better then I expected.

From doing a few purses years ago, I recalled that it was difficult to get the shape right on some pieces. I figured I would use 3 separate sewing threads to ensure it would turn out good shape wise.  I divided the circle in half and sewed to the right with one pair of needles, and then sewed to the left with another pair of needles. I sewed one hole alternating from left to right until I got the other side. I went back over a few times and then used an X-Acto knife to cut the threads flush. Using the third piece of thread, I then sewed the flat part and tied it in with the side thread. I once again went back a few times and cut the threads flush. It is hard to tell that I used 4 pieces of thread to sew the sides and bottom together. I am a bit proud of how that turned out.

Here you can see the left and right pair of threads.

Yay! I am done. Party time!!! Oh wait, not quite finished yet. I still have a few things to make the quiver look a little better.

Time to whip out one of the skivers to clean up that bottom piece and also to run it along the sides to even out the two pieces that are sewn together.

Here you can see that I have trimmed the bottom piece so that it is flush with the other piece. Pardon the colours. My bounced flash is darkening the bottom piece, It is the same colour as the sides.

With both bottom and side trimmed. It is time to make those edges a bit more professional. Here is another nylon slicker that I use for odd shapes. Once again, wet the edges and rub furiously  to even out the edges, and to also smooth it out.

Now for the final finish. I damp a sponge and gently rub it on some saddle soap until it lathers. I then coat and gently rub the soap into the leather. Wait to dry, and then gently rub with a soft cloth to give the end product a sheen. The saddle soap replenishes the natural oils that are taken out of the leather after repeated wetting and drying. It will also preserve the leather.

And the final product. I do have some proper feather fletched arrows, but they are buried deep at the moment. Some discontinued Easton Autumn Orange XX75 Aluminum arrows with Blazer vanes will have to do for the cheesy finished product shot. :D

This was a big project, especially seeing that I haven't done any leather work in such a long time. Nice to know I haven't lost it though. The feeling of accomplishment is great.  Thanks for letting me bore you with the build details.  :salute:

Now it is party time! My sore fingers demand it. :D

I feel inadequate. Not only can you do cool stuff like this..you also take much better pictures than I do.

I would have made an arrow quiver out of a couple of empty Pringles cans and a bunch of ducktape. Then I would have screwed up the pictures.  :-\ :-\
