Stop eating popcorn and go make some knives. :twak:

:P

Stop eating popcorn and buy some rust. :twak:

:P

Went visiting today and managed to squeeze in three carboots  ;)
Inc;
Stanley steelmaster hammer
German slippy
Brass and copper Kettle

Ooh and four pick-Ax handles  (hope they fit)  ::)

I spent 2 hours making one of the files glow red with a blowtorch and it is still magnetic... I did the spark test earlier so I know they are good.

I will see if they are softer now tomorrow, and, if it did not work I will soften them with a charcoal fire.

How did you let them cool down, D? If you got them cherry red, they should soften off if they cool slowly enough (in a box of vermiculite). Try not to keep the steel at elevated temperatures for too long though as it can burn carbon off (reducing the hardenability later)

 You know it should become non magnetic then magnetic again as it cools?

I checked them with the magnet when they were still red, though I could not get them to be really bright red. I assume there is some cooling when I move the torch to check with the magnet.  I let them cool slowly in air so if the process worked they should be soft. I checked them with a screw and I think the screw can now scratch the file, but I did not try anything else (maybe the screw just "writes" on the file and it looks like it is scratching it).

I will check how hard they are today, if I have time. If It did not work then I will go with charcoal and an air pump.

So can Car Boot finds translate to Yard sale finds as well? I've gotten some pretty cool stuff and haven't had anywhere to share it.

Awesome! Newest are some antique German Beck Kassel Binoculars, but unfortunately I don't have anything with me other than some old advertisements at school.

Theres an actual MTo rule that says anything bought from yard sales, flea markets, a car lot at the back of the 7-11 from a man with a false beard etc etc has to be posted in this thread  :D

I've considered posting my found tools here too, but most of them are current tools, not particularly interesting and rarely very rusty for items found lying on the side of the road. I used to post them to a blog, but haven't had much time (interest) in the past couple of years to document my finds.

Here's the finds that I have with me. The Demo knife has Ulster 48 written on the bail with brass liners, the pliers are Mac and have far less rust than you guys may like :D. The Ads I got just because I thought they would look pretty cool on the dorm walls. The 7-up one is from 1950, the other is 52.

Yes I'm pretty sure this one was military issue, and I think 48 is the year of manufacture. Either way it was too cool to leave there :D. The posters have more than a few years on me as well hahahaha.
