Benchmade Mini presidio ultra 527
on: July 02, 2010, 11:26:16 PM
I like the blade profile of these but am not crazy about the hollow ground.  Anyone own one?  Thoughts on durability?  Praises, gripes?

Any particular reason you don't like hollow grinds?

I prefer the strength of flat ground over hollow ground.  Nothing really more than personal preference.  For instance I've read that this knife, especially at the tip is really thin and that makes me a bit nervous.  I have enough knives with tips missing.

If you're honestly that tough on knife tips, I'm not sure a flat grind would do a lot for you on a drop point blade.  Have you considered more of a clip-point style?  With the tip a lot further up on the blade, it should (theoretically) be much tougher, and Benchmade does make some very nice clip-point blades, or even some of the modified drop-points that move the tip further up the profile like the Barrage and Griptilian.

How about a Wharcliffe or sheepsfoot? Or do you *need* a point?

I like the point, but I might look into a wharncliff- they have me intrigued.  Still looking for some insight from someone who owns the presidio ultra, or better yet a comparison with the grip.  I've looked at the specs and videos and am a bit confused.  Specs say it is smaller than a grip but the videos I see make out to be a larger handle.

Hollow grinds arent necessarily bad, just look at the classic buck 110. And FWIW I have a BM 555 mini grip hollow ground and i love it, its not as strong as a full flat grind in theory but its far from fragile. And if you need to pry on something get a prybar. :tu:

Good point on the hollow grind.  I try not to pry.
